In an interview with PocketGamer.biz, Jami Laes, EVP of Rovio’s global games operations revealed Rovio’s new publishing arm: “LVL11”.
While we have people making Angry Birds, in the next room there are the guys dreaming completely new things. Some of those things are so different that we wanted to package that in a different way and come up with a publishing title for it, a publishing label if you will. We decided to call it LVL11
LVL11 is a bit like Rovio Stars, but for Rovio’s own experimental projects that might not fit under the Rovio brand we all know. RETRY — which is shown in the video above — is the first game to come out of the LVL11. In this side scrolling, 8-bit game, you pilot a plane through a maze of obstacles to collect coins.
RETRY – a game so hard, so addictive, so old school that you’ll think you’ve stepped into an 8-bit time machine and gone back to 1986. Totally rad!
Is it Flappy Bird hard? If so, the name “RETRY” will definitely be fitting. RETRY is currently only available through the iOS App Stores in Finland, Canada, and Poland. A worldwide release will be out soon. It’s unclear at this time which platforms RETRY will be released on, but I would guess that it will be widely available.
I am excited to see what type of games come out of LVL11 and am eager to give RETRY a spin. I love these 8-bit retro games. Keep your eyes peeled to the Nest as we will do our best to cover all things LVL11, including RETRY.
So, now it’s up to you. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.
I got the game trough Canada. SO it´s not only available in Finland
@sal9 Available early on iOS in Finland, Canada and Poland.
Thanks @josm and @bad-piggies-2. The post has been updated.
I don’t think I would play this game, just isn’t my cup of tea. I hate game retro style, although I played tons of them in 80s. The most appealing things I find in Rovio’s AB and BP games are vivid colourfull graphics and lovable cute characters.
Played it a bit already.
Frustrating. Not sure for me.
It really doesn´t seem like a Rovio game. It was rather disappointing actually. The levels were to hard and the controls were also bad (anyway hard to control.)
If it’s anywhere near Flappy Bird-like, the controls are meant to be frustrating.
I bet the worst designed lolplanes in Bad Piggies are easier to control.
That’s kind of the point though.
It is a 8-bit game and usually harder game play comes with it. It’s mainly for us who have been around playing 8-bit games, when games used to be hard.
Yay! A combination of Flappy bird, arcades, Planes, and Rovio! Can’t wait!
@dh-kim has already made a facsimile of Retry in Bad Piggies. It’s hilarious.
@les-toreadors Lol looks funny. I tried something similar in the Sandbox level 1, but referred to it as Flappy Piggies.
I will state that I have been spoiled with the graphics, the presentation, the character movement, the mental analysis and the cognitive challenge of the ABs games.
That is not to say that Retry will not present the same but from the video, the graphics are a bit different.
Objectively, will download it and give it a try. It does look interesting.
Some of the 8-bit style games are quite the hit lately. Some of them look primitive but are fast paced and futuristic in gameplay concepts. Check out Luftrausers for instance. It is an 8 bit airplane shooter game turned up to 11 with very innovative gameplay.
Retry looks to be a far cry from that level though, judging from the trailer here.
Bad Piggies Lolplanes were there… @Les-Toreadors
Yeah, looks… horribly frustrating :)
Now I am going to think up some wacky design for Luftrausers in Bad Piggies :)
just downloaded the game. I am sure my kids will put it through its paces.
OMG! This game is so maddeningly addictive!! Killed my battery twice last night. (and I think I might be better at it than the kids)
Well, when I download this game, I bet I’ll hit that “retry” button 500,000 times per level. Should give me a good idea of what Flappy Bird is like, because I never got the chance to play it. Doesn’t seem like Rovio’s overall style, though.
Will u make walkthroughs for this game? @birdleader
Maybe when it comes out worldwide.
My nostalgic side loves the graphics & gameplay in this. “Retry” is a very appropriate name, I’m sure I’ve already hit the button hundreds of times. Learning to control it is a bit frustrating, but for me this game is a great way to pass some time.
I especially love the tips you get when starting a level. Some are game related but I’ve seen things such as “drink water not pop”, “eat your greens”, & “yellow is very effective against wood”.
Call me crazy, but this may be my new favorite game. Here’s why:
-The gameplay and general concept is very creative. The mechanics of the flight and different levels make it more exciting and more rewarding than “Flappy Bird”.
-The “tips” while the levels are loading are hilarious. I won’t spoil them for you, but they’re really funny.
-The different music for each world is cool.
-But most of all, it isn’t bogged down with in app purchases. The largest purchase is $4 and really isn’t needed. It doesn’t try to force you to buy them like the Angry Birds games do.
This is certainly worth downloading and I hope Rovio makes more like it in the future.
I hope this goes to android.
Currently at 4-2 (Pyramids World).
As a C64 era child. I like this.
It’s difficult, but rewarding.
Haven’t bought any coins. So this can be beaten for free.
Level 3-7 beaten with only 319 Retrys!
Total crashes so far: 4287. Time played 08:14:57. Addictive?
