Alright, I have a copy of the Rio DVD in hand and I think it clears up a lot of confusion. I will do my best to articulate this for everyone. How you obtain the new “Golden Beachball” episode differs depending whether you’re on a iOS/Android device or PC/Mac. It’s unclear if other platforms will be supported, but at this point the instructions the come with the DVD currently say, “Available on iOS and Android only” (in addition to the PC & Mac). I’ve broken the instructions below and linked to the scanned images of the actual inserts found in the Rio DVD / Blu-ray (sorry, the code is obscured).
First though, a bit of background on the new episode. Currently the “Golden Beachball” episode contains 15 levels. Most of the levels are quite fun and some are actually pretty challenging. The leaderboard and walkthroughs are ready!
Updates:
- The latest update for Symbian includes the Golden Beachball Episode
Weird bug (caught on video): for some people once you unlock the Golden Beachball levels it will show you have 17 out of 15 watermelons. If you watch the video below very closely you can see the count change after FujiToast returns to the episode selection screen after obtaining the Golden Beachball.Fixed in the Airfield Chase v1.3.0 update.- There are currently no achievements available in Golden Beachball (this was likely done to keep it a secret).
- If you have issues it looks like Rovio and Fox have a dedicated support email address: [email protected].
- Mac users can now obtain the Golden Beachball episode, but not in the traditional manner (see below).
Instructions for Mobile Devices View DVD Insert Instructions
To unlock the new episode you have to find the Golden Beachball that is hidden in an existing level (video walkthrough below). You DO NOT have to enter a code. This works in both Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Rio Free (as of the v1.2.0 update).
- Launch Angry Birds Rio select Beach Volley and head to level 6-13. In Angry Birds Rio Free head to level 3-2.
- Now you need to drop a bird below the slingshot platform as shown in the video below (click here to see the graphical instructions). To do this lightly pull back on a red bird and fire him almost straight up. You want him to fall in the crevasse right in front of the slingshot, but he’ll need enough force to roll for a bit. Once you drop the bird in the opening below the slingshot the Golden Beachball will pop up (it is not visible until you get your bird down there). If your bird has enough speed it will rollover and get it.
- Once you hit it the levels will now be available. Head back to the level selection screen and swipe to the left in order to access the new levels!
Instructions for PC View DVD Insert Instructions
- If you already have installed the latest update (v1.2.2) for Angry Birds Rio PC open it up. If you haven’t yet installed it head over to download.angrybirds.com and download and install it.
- Now launch Angry Birds Rio and click “Redeem Code” and enter the code found on the insert that came in the DVD or Blu-ray copy of Rio. Caution: per Rovio, this code will only work ONCE, so make sure your entering on the computer you want to play on. Also, if you purchase the movie digitally — say through iTunes — you won’t get a code, so take that into consideration.
- Upon successfully activating your code the Golden Beachball levels will open up.
Instructions for Mac More Info about the Angry Birds Bonus Version
Note, for unknown reasons the Angry Birds Rio v1.2.2 Mac update didn’t contain the Golden Beachball episode, so Rovio has offered up a new method of obtaining it.
- Head to http://riodvd.angrybirds.com (opens in a new window)
- Once there scroll down a bit and in the gray instruction box click the “Mac” tab at the top.
- The first arrow prompts you to, “Download Angry Birds Rio Bonus Version from here.” Download it to your Mac. Note, that is says “OS 10.6” or better required.
- Once it’s downloaded double-click it and drag the Angry Birds Bonus icon to your Applications folder. It’s now installed. Launch it!
- If you have a copy of Rio on DVD or Blu-ray and haven’t used the secret code yet, click “Redeem Code” and enter the code found on the insert that came with the movie.

Yes. The Free app hasn’t had an update in some time, so I believe the beachball will be added in a near-future update.
Hopefully I am just early, because I rolled my red bird all the way off the screen to the left and no golden beach ball showed up.
Your device must read 2 August (or later). Also, this currently only works in the full app.

Did roll all the way to left by dropping into the chasm. On android amazon version so maybe I don’t even have it yet.

Many Android users have reported success. The screenshot was taken from the iTunes Facebook account, not from Rovio.

I haven’t been able to try on the PC. I wonder if some devices will indeed require a code. Seems to early to tell. Are you sure you’ve hit the right spot? I would also try again when it’s actually the 2nd.

What a delightful surprise. Some of the levels are like a pinball machine, they kind of remind me of some of the Golden Egg levels.

It worked on my Android HTC Desire HD. More luck than judgement. It just rolled into the right place. Levels pretty good, upside down one bit disconcerting.

I think any time after 2 August should be fine. Try again today using the normal time and date.

That will do it. Your app must have all of the Carnival Upheaval levels. What device are you playing on?
I am playing on a Acer tab with andriod. The full Angry birds Rio Game.

Using the Android Market should work to update your app.

Presumably which iPhone version you’re using won’t matter but all the other aspects will.

It already is… I got it on my HTC Incredible earlier today. *note* you can also shoot your bird a a high angle and have it bounce back INTO the chasm…. you don’t necessarily need to shoot it straight up (I didn’t).
Got it on my HTC Sensation, nothing on the PC yet, hopefully we won’t need to buy the movie. (PC version is updated.)
I was so disappointed that there weren’t levels for the fruit like there were for golden eggs. The golden beach balls will make up for it!

Me too. So apparently one golden beach ball is worth two golden melons :). I’d be curious to see if that let people who hadn’t found them all (the melons) to get the achievement.

It should be available IF Symbian has Ch. 8 of Carnival Upheaval. Otherwise, that update is needed first.

Correct. Rovio tweeted there are no achievements for Golden Beachball (at least at this time).
OK, I have the bonus levels. But I can’t help but feel like I was conned. Weren’t we lead to believe that we would have to purchase the RIO DVD/BD in order to access these levels?
It was the initial assumption, yes. But why look a gift horse in the mouth?
Because I purchased the RIO BD on the understanding that I would have to buy it to get a code that would allow me to access the levels. There is no “gift horse” in this scenario for me. RIO was a fine movie, but I don’t see a scenario where I’m going to be watching it a bunch of times.
Could you return or exchange it? I apologize, but up until yesterday everyone thought it would require a code.
I opened the disc to get the code. I can sell it used, but I don’t see Amazon accepting a return based on a sob story of bad information I got from a fan site.
First off, it’s we did not convey bad info. If you read the updated post above you DO need a code if you’re playing on a PC and Mac. If you’re playing on a mobile device you don’t, but I think it was a pretty safe guess to assume you would. Even on the official Angry Birds Rio DVD site — riodvd.angrybirds.com — they state, “To access the bonus content on an iPhone/iPad/Android, see the backside of the Voucher for the secret code. Hit the skill shot described to unlock the Golden Beach Ball episode on your mobile device.” By secret code they mean the “secret spot” in the game. Sorry that you bought something you didn’t need, but don’t blame us for conveying information from official sources.

So the sneak peak levels that you presented as “DVD levels” were in fact “Golden Beachball levels”? How is it possible that you had wrong information on your site?
And since today the DVD should be out, does anybody have the DVD levels yet?
Yes, the DVD levels are the “Golden Beachball”. We get things wrong all the time, but we present facts and rumors based on what we feel we know at the time. That said, we get things right much more often than we get them wrong AND we always try to do right by the community. We never intentionally mislead and only post info from credible sources. In this case we heard (from a credible source) that a “code” would be required to unlock these levels, but right now it seems the DVD and Blu-ray will contain info (not a code) on how to access the Golden Beachball levels. The releases are still connected, but you don’t have to purchase Rio to obtain the new levels. I will still purchase Rio, but all in all I think this is a good thing.
Ah ok. Good that I’m living in Europe. Here the DVD will be out in one month. So I can still cancel my order.

Is the golden beach ball visible before you launch the red bird? I am playing on my pc, and have not been able to unlock the levels (maybe will be later today?). If anyone is able to add a video, it would be appreciated. Some of us need pictures:). Thanks.
We plan to add video. The golden beach ball is not visible before launch. That said, I think PC (and Mac most likely) currently require the DVD code, since the redemption system is in place in their latest update. This is only my thought, but I have not heard any PC users report Golden Beachball levels yet.

thanks for the clarification. I saw the comment from gag, so I thought maybe the levels were available on my pc. I guess I need to buy the dvd : ). I can always recoup a bit of my expense on ebay.
Yeah, I just bought the DVD myself. It confirms that you do need a code to access the episode on a PC or Mac.
So just to clarify – even if I purchased this from the Rovio site, and downloaded it onto my PC, I won’t be able to get the Golden Beach Ball? I updated the game, I’ve tried level 6-13, and nothing.
For Mac/PC, you can get the Golden Beachball levels, but you need a code from the DVD/Blu-ray of the Rio movie.
