Fresh on the heels of the “They’re coming…” teaser image, Rovio has announced that “Angry Birds Space” is set to blast off on March 22nd, 2012. This is not an update, but rather, it’s a completely new version of Angry Birds. Rovio’s lunar outpost for this epic launch is: space.angrybirds.com.
This will be Rovio’s fourth paid version of Angry Birds and the first to deviate from the traditional physics we all know so well. That said, this Summer Pignic Golden Egg level might give us a small glimpse as to what to expect; however, I’m sure the physics have been much refined and improved since then.
It looks like Yahoo scored an exclusive on this one, as they have an article with some details. You can also find some official details in Rovio’s press kit. Said details are a bit vague, but below are some highlights:
- You will be flinging birds on alien planets while contending with zero gravity. This opens up new gameplay elements like slow-motion puzzles and “lightspeed” destruction.”
- Angry Birds Space will include new birds alongside familiar ones, sporting new super powers.
- The three star rating system will remain.
- Both NASA and National Geographic are launch partners.
- On March 22nd Rovio will simultaneously launch in mobile gaming channels, retail, and an animation channel. Rovio states this is the first time this has ever been done for a mobile game. (See updates below for more info.)

Updates!
Feb. 22nd, 2012 – Thanks to these awesome Angry Birds Space stickers (above) on we’ve got our first glimpse at some of the revamped birds and pigs in Angry Birds Space. I don’t know about you guys, but these look awesome! We were asked to take the stickers down.
Feb. 23rd, 2012 – New authentic footage from Rovio’s personal space exploration reveals a giant slingshot on the moon. While the video doesn’t say much (watch on YouTube), it does reveal that information will be revealed on March 8th.
Feb. 25th, 2012 – Rovio has confirmed that the March 22nd release date applies to iOS, Android, PC, and Mac. (We guess PC means the standalone version from Rovio’s site, and Android means both Market and Amazon, but this is just our guess.)
Feb. 27th, 2012 – Houston, we have a slingshot. The latest video (above) says that Angry Birds Space will be “launching with the Samsung Galaxy Note”. (Remember the Advent Challenge?) Not entirely sure what this means though, since the Note was released some months ago. Any ideas?
Mar. 5th, 2012 – The third teaser has been released. It seems like the pigs will indeed be making their appearance in AB:Space.

I only thought I was imagining this but another Angry Birds game?? Sweetness!!!! I’m definitely buying it when it comes out.

Seasons is not over. There will be new updates such as St.Patricks Day which might be expected in March and so.

Question is, will there be power-ups and the ME. Also what would the ME be like, having limited amount until you buy more, or one time purchase; unlimited use?
given as this is a new app, i would guess (and kinda hope) it would be like ABo, ANS and ABR, with no power-ups and single purchase ME, perhaps the ME may come a bit later though
guess I should add, this IS only speculation!
Further, given our experience with the dragon in YotD, I’d like to see the ME in the Android based version.

Well…If this phrase>>”simultaneously launch in mobile gaming channels, retail, and an animation channel” is true, then it’s no any reason to “scheduling” the launch of each platform, for example iOS first then Android after few day and last Symbian.

I don’t think Angry Birds Space will be universal app on iOS. There will be separate HD version for iPad along with SD iPhone/iPod touch version. With rumors of next generation iPad having screen resolution of 2048×1536 (double the resolution of iPad 2 1024×768) the developers have a good reason to keep HD version separate and charge some extra $ for making it iPad 3 (or 2S or whatever they’ll call it) ready.

Like how there were no pigs in rio but bologna of them, the same is what I’m thinking. Replacing pigs could be alien pigs. More likely to be green than pigs.

I just hope that they can make a verision that can be played on iPhone and iPad. A hd verision that can be played on iPhone. If they do this, we could be able to sync our scores using iCloud!
Rovio’s sync utility which is under process is bigger than just sync between two iOS devices using iCloud. They aim to facilitate cross platform sync.
Sync using iCloud doesn’t necessarily be between universal app installed on iPhone and iPad. It can sync between HD and SD version. e.g. Cut the Rope
I think it does need to be a universal app. It needs to be able to be played on both iPhone/iPod and iPad. Take scriblenauts remix for example. It’s a universal app and it can transfer all my data from my phone to the iPad 2.
Cut the Rope is a good counter example though. It does not HAVE to be universal. But Rovio needs an inter-OS sync, not just an iOS sync.

Thanks catsnbirds :) I was thinking about changing it, and then the new game was announced, so it was the obvious choice really :) I’m guessing the bird in your avatar is an ANGRY bird, so popped that cat with ease! :)

There could be boss fights, maybe the birds will destroy astronaut pigs and free their alien friends. The new birds in the game can’t be aliens if they are gonna be in seasons or normal. The mighty eagle could ride a spaceship. The other birds can destroy flying pig saucers. Big moon crumbly rocks can be destroyed for 3000 points. Chapters could be solar systems and worlds can be planets. I don’t know maybe there can be short chapters so there is a lot of planets. There could be a star level where if a bird touches the surface of the star it disappears. An underground of a planet level would be awesome.
Correction:Maybe there could be short WORLDS so there ARE a lot of planets in the chapter.

Here’s my idea on how the story starts. The angry birds are celebrating getting the eggs back. But then the pigs tie ropes to angry birds tails which are attached to a big rocket ship. When the rocket blasts off so do the angry birds! The rocket then crashes onto the moon, scattering 3 parts of the rocket (The tip, the blaster, and the middle). Realizing the angry birds needed to get the pieces back, they need to battle the aliens, and get back to earth to save their precious eggs from being eaten!
Seems like #ABSpace is the offical Hastag.

You can go to angrybirds.com/space and download a wallpaper and make it your own Splashscreen when you are playing AB, ABS, or ABS
Angry Birds was not designed to be “modified”.
Even if some have managed to mod the game, I strongly advise you not to. You might end up loosing all your progress, corrupt other files and crash your game.
Not worth it at all.
i agree with Sal here, download the wallpaper by all means, but its too risky ‘modifying’ your game. i’d settle with just putting it as your background! :)

Unfortunately, there was no ABS update for Valentines Day.
We got a new game for valentines day: Angry Birds Facebook ;-)
We also had many updates the last three months.
i really can not believe they are doing this! it sounds like fun
