Fresh on the heels of the “They’re coming…” teaser image, Rovio has announced that “Angry Birds Space” is set to blast off on March 22nd, 2012. This is not an update, but rather, it’s a completely new version of Angry Birds. Rovio’s lunar outpost for this epic launch is: space.angrybirds.com.
This will be Rovio’s fourth paid version of Angry Birds and the first to deviate from the traditional physics we all know so well. That said, this Summer Pignic Golden Egg level might give us a small glimpse as to what to expect; however, I’m sure the physics have been much refined and improved since then.
It looks like Yahoo scored an exclusive on this one, as they have an article with some details. You can also find some official details in Rovio’s press kit. Said details are a bit vague, but below are some highlights:
- You will be flinging birds on alien planets while contending with zero gravity. This opens up new gameplay elements like slow-motion puzzles and “lightspeed” destruction.”
- Angry Birds Space will include new birds alongside familiar ones, sporting new super powers.
- The three star rating system will remain.
- Both NASA and National Geographic are launch partners.
- On March 22nd Rovio will simultaneously launch in mobile gaming channels, retail, and an animation channel. Rovio states this is the first time this has ever been done for a mobile game. (See updates below for more info.)

Feb. 22nd, 2012 – Thanks to these awesome Angry Birds Space stickers (above) on we’ve got our first glimpse at some of the revamped birds and pigs in Angry Birds Space. I don’t know about you guys, but these look awesome! We were asked to take the stickers down.
Feb. 23rd, 2012 – New authentic footage from Rovio’s personal space exploration reveals a giant slingshot on the moon. While the video doesn’t say much (watch on YouTube), it does reveal that information will be revealed on March 8th.
Feb. 25th, 2012 – Rovio has confirmed that the March 22nd release date applies to iOS, Android, PC, and Mac. (We guess PC means the standalone version from Rovio’s site, and Android means both Market and Amazon, but this is just our guess.)
Feb. 27th, 2012 – Houston, we have a slingshot. The latest video (above) says that Angry Birds Space will be “launching with the Samsung Galaxy Note”. (Remember the Advent Challenge?) Not entirely sure what this means though, since the Note was released some months ago. Any ideas?
Mar. 5th, 2012 – The third teaser has been released. It seems like the pigs will indeed be making their appearance in AB:Space.

I was wondering whether the game will be released for the Galaxy Note first instead of other Android phones.
I don’t think so, since it says it will land on iOS, Android, PC and Mac on the 22nd.

I’m glad it is coming out to Android on the same day. I LOVE Android, but I’m sick of having to wait a week or more for updates to come out for Android after they come out for iOS. It normally seems like us Android guys are discriminated against by iOS folks.

Well, you forget that AB Chrome is Google only. Plus, android is the only one to have the full game for free.

All I was saying is that Android typically receives its updates on the same day as iOS. I can only think of two exceptions:
— Birdday Party was delayed
— Rio via Android Market is usually 1 week later, but Rio via Amazon Appstore (for Android) is the same day as iOS.
I have the feeling a misunderstanding has occured. My first comment was meant to angrybirdy0420, and I have the idea that you thought it was meant to you…

The time is not known but the date is 22nd of March.
Here we are the “purple” bird with the others “angry space birds”: they are just the normal angry birds but modified foe this game. I think the ice one is the orange bird, but i’m not sure:

Just had Safari freeze while trying to look at the flicker images. Flicker may not be prepared for the flocks of AB fans (they should think flocks as in The Birds — also starts in SF). Van arrived in San Francisco Sun during the day, and visited Fisherman’s Wharf at night. Text says they were at Moscone Center (convention hall), but didn’t see photo. It takes 6 hrs to drive from SF to LA, unless they plan to use a super sling or fly the van…
Another interesting tidbit for those who aren’t familiar with US geography or legends: Van will be visiting Roswell, NM, infamous location of alien landing years ago.
Don’t know for certain, but there could be some clues to ABSp from here :)

They’re coming…to my hometown!
Gaack! Just realized that Rio was a 20th Century Fox film, and it would make sense for the van to stop at the studio, which is in west LA. Could be worse than when Obama visits LA. Hope they make an unannounced visit early in the morning (before rush hour). On the other hand there is an optical fiber communication conference at the convention center (not a big crowd draw), and as far as I can tell, nothing at the Staples Center (they are next to each other downtown). They have plenty of parking, and getting to downtown on a weekday is a nightmare anyway, so won’t make it any worse.
@BL — Are you planning to visit one of the van stops in LA?
If I were BL, I wouldn’t take a 1 hour drive to LA from orange county(that’s where BL lives, right?).
In LA a 1 hour drive is nothing, but it appears that BL is in SF at the game developers conference, which is a 6 hr drive or 1 hr flight (air time). So I doubt he’ll come. BTW, not sure where BL lives.

Van is at GDC now, as far as I can tell, but in LA tomorrow. Surely BL would be willing to drive 1 hr for some facetime with the ABS van, even if he doesn’t want a t-shirt?
Well, it’s BL’s decision, not mine. BTW it could be a total of 2 1/2 hours(2 hours driving roundtrip, 1/2 hour at the van).
BL is not going to meet van in LA; he’s in SF at GDL. Given that this is LA, after all, it could be WAY more than a 2.5 hr round trip, were he to drive from OC to LA. It could easily take me 1 hr to drive 10 miles to downtown, almost all on freeway (also known as LA’s biggest parking lot). : )
BirdLeader will be at GDC, though unfortunately neither Fuji nor I will be in attendance. It would be a wee bit difficult to go there and teach on the East coast on the same day.
Van is at Grumman’s Chinese theater in Hollywood at 10 am today. Either they took my tweeted suggestion, or I made a lucky guess. Still expect them to stop at convention center / Staples area, lots easier to park. Looks like most (all?) of the t-shirts are the same design. Their flicker link shows one of them (I guess that’s who it is) wearing a red sweatshirt with the same design (no helmet, just the same outline of eyes).
If you go, tell them AngryBirdsNest sent you and tell them Bird Leader needs one too!

BTW — I think they stayed at the Standard on Sunset. Nothing like living high on the hog (pun intended). Guess Rovio can afford it.

Sorry, not going to happen. The van crew didn’t update their location between the time they left Grauman (sp?) and just before 3 when they got to the SM pier. Do you know what trying to get somewhere in SM at 3 pm is like, let alone getting back home? I get the impression that the van is not interested in giving t-shirts to those already addicted to AB, just trying to recruit more fans by giving t-shirts to whatever tourists they run across.
More fans=more AB downloads=more money for Rovio.
