We are proud to be the first to announce the next update to Angry Birds Space — called Pig Dipper — is coming soon. The details are very sparse, but there are definitely some things worth reporting, so without further ado.
Note: On December 7th, we received word that the episode name, as appears in Game Center, has been changed. The original name was “Water Galaxy”, a strong contributor to our speculations below. All references below reflect the updated name. This reminds us that we should never omit our favorite disclaimer: “These names are subject to change.”
- Since the original name we reported was, “Water Galaxy”, we’re going to go out on a limb and speculate that there might be traversible water in-game. Maybe we will see something similar to what what we saw in Angry Birds Seasons Piglantis. It had new physics that exploited both buoyancy and density. Again, this is pure speculation as of now.
- As you can see from the image above, it looks like Power Ups are indeed coming to Angry Birds Space. If you aren’t familiar with Power Ups, you might want to check out our classroom lesson or our ABo v2.2.0 release post.
- We do not know if these will be precisely the same Power Ups, but there is little doubt that Sling Scope is superfluous in Angry Birds Space.
- For those of you who may be upset about the introduction of Power Ups, I offer you a potential silver lining. Based on the image, we are willing to speculate that Power Up scores will be distinguished from the non Power Up scores. How? Well, that we don’t know. We could be wrong, but we like to look at things from a glass-half-full perspective.

While you are welcome to share your opinions about this update below, we kindly ask that those displeased with Power Ups express their opinions in a suitable forum thread. This is not the place to vent about said issue. That said, Rovio took our previous feedback very seriously, which is one of the reasons we believe we’ll see separate scores. Fingers crossed.

New Image: On 8 January, Rovio released a teaser image on Facebook (caption: “Coming soon. (Quack!)”) and Twitter (caption: “Bathtime! #comingsoon”). Here, we include the image from Twitter as it shows a little bit more. We hope this means that Pig Dipper will launch within a matter of days!
New Pig Dipper Trailer
On January 9th, Rovio released a trailer for Pig Dipper (yes, the name is now confirmed!) The caption says the update will be available “*very* soon” and the video says “Now available”. So perhaps we could see the update land within a matter of hours! The water physics look similar to the Piglantis episode of Seasons; the video says 30 levels will be included; and the Power Ups look completely new!
Too bad I couldn’t play any games because of my broken laptop. No Hoth, no Winter Wonderham, and I’ve missed over 7 news!

I’m guessing it will come out in one week, Thursday the 13th. It usually comes out on a thursday, and about a week after one of these game center things.
I was hoping it was gonna come out today, but I thought it would be unlikely for it to come out only a day after it was on game center. Oh well.

Another update! OK, that’s it for me with score addict. It’s going to hurt but I’m going to have to stop beating the average scores each time and just 3 star everything until I’ve caught up/played all the updates/new games.
Do I assume correctly @amslimfordy, from the notes above, that even if the Power Up scores are showed separately, the Nest will only have leaderboards for scores attained with no power ups?
We haven’t decided yet.
It almost seems necessary to have 2 seperate leaderboards. But I can see the need to have only 1 (preferrably without power ups) Either way, you guys have my sympathy in trying to keep the scores straight. Can only imagine the headaches you have with ABO (and no distinction)
@chicadee, don’t give up on the Score Addict. It’s a noble goal, just give up other things that take up your precious bird flinging time. Oh, like sleep, work, chores, etc.

Finally, after the cruddy pun-less names of Utopia and Red Planet, Rovio finally gives us our fourth properly-titled episode.
To be fair, Utopia was named by a fan, and I think they chose to not get fancy with Red Planet because they timed it with the Mars Curiosity Rover landing. But, yeah. Excited for a punny name.
Yeah, Utopia was fan-made, and I don’t think the levels were particularly good, but yeah, Red Planet is kind of a boring name. I guess they thought it would be more interesting that plainly “mars.”
I have to disagree @oobgular17. In my opinion, I really liked the concept of the Utopia levels, and it was a fantastic way to introduce the fat pig! Plus It was so sun to bounce, smash, and destruct through 30 sweet-tooth taunting levels!
I think this water should be more realistic than Piglantis (i.e. birds and other objects displace water, Bomb can throw droplets into zero gravity, etc.) I also am curious to see how Ice Bird will work.
That sounds like a good idea, maybe the water could have a physics engine like the one in Where’s My Water?

Perhaps we’ll see another pre-existing Bird adapted to this game? It’s been a while since the Orange Bird debuted, and we only have the White, Green, and Pink Birds left.

Just a thought. With power ups (apparently) coming to AB Space, what’s that going to do to the Danger Zone addict badge? Seems like it will be MUCH easier to obtain now.
Maybe it should be shut down – or a separate badge awarded after the PUs arrive. @amslimfordy ?
We will have to see how this is handled visually by the app. Here’s my guess: Since there are two separate leaderboards in GameCenter, perhaps there will be two viewable scores on the episode selection screen as well.
On the other hand, if there is no such distinction, we may be in a bit of trouble. In this case, it would likely be closed.
@amslimfordy, that brings up another interesting question. If there are indeed 2 separate scores, wonder if they would have 2 separate Score Addict thresholds?
If there is no distinction, I agree that the Score Addict badge should be retired, just like the Seasons Greedings 1-16 feather badge.

@sparty83 I agree, we have a lot of questions ourselves. I will say that the major advantage we have is that we can ask these questions ahead of time. I don’t think Rovio will waste the highly-coveted achievement space with a PU-centric achievement. However, we can hope that Rovio will use the “DangerZoneSA=true” only if non-PU score exceeds 3.13M.

I like the Pig Dipper name much better than Water Galaxy. More in keeping with the original feel of AB in general.

Ice bird looks like he will be hard to understand…. I think that, as in piglantis, orange bird will float up real fast… I also think gravity would affect how much they float upward, or rather, how fast they float upward. Hopefully the line guide will show their true path even with the water! This chapter may have water, but it will no doubt be more complicated than piglantis. I wonder what this will look like from the episode selection screen, and I also can’t wait to see water in Bad Piggies! But I really hope they do bubble pigs underwater….

I am guessing that this will come out before the end of the year. This will give us a Classic game update, Seasons update, Space Update and Star Wars update all within the last month. All Web games will be completed by then (Heikki & Philadelphia Eagles), Even Green Day on AB Friends is to be removed by year’s end.
Then I am thinking we will probably get a month or so of a breather. They can only pump out new content so often..
Oh, there will probably be a Seasons update in less than a month, but it will be more tech in nature. Possibly some more bug fixes, and the removal of the advent calendar control in WW, as it will no longer be needed after the 25th, and things like that. A new theme, with new levels, is something I don’t expect until February or March.
Please call me an ambulance: I’m passing out for the powerups coming in the game. And not for the new levels.
I guess that the power-up won’t come out on PC, just like the previous ABO update.
Pig Dipper sounds interesting as a watery planet. Maybe only available in gravitational field (1st thought that throwing pigs through floating space waters will freeze them quickly and permanently, but we can’t throw pigs. We POP pigs.)

Here is what I hope- Rovio was all set to release the Pig Dipper update with power ups yet without score differentiation, they read our posts concerning that differentiation, and they are revamping the update to address our concerns now and forever!

What would be the point of water in 0 gravity, just wondering? It wouldn’t affect anything. You could make it look like it was water in zero gravity by making the water fill up the entire gravity field I guess….. You also could have a planet that would be pretty much like water, just put a bunch of volcanoes on it that point outward and it might have the same water effect… Idk just thinking out loud. But do you think there will be a water current just like piglantis?
Water would freeze in space, so it wouldn’t work in zero- gravity. My guess is that it will be only in the gravity zones.
Maybe frozen water can be pushed into gravity fields, where it melts and breaks buildings, piggies etc.
