SURPRISE!!! Rovio has released Angry Birds Star Wars II a day early! Speculation suggests that it is related to the release of iOS 7, but who knows for sure — and frankly, who cares?! We’ll talk more about system requirements further below, but for now, Angry Birds Star Wars II is available for iOS, Android via Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, and Windows 8 Phone.
Update 24 October: ABSW2 released for PC.
Let’s jump straight into the details. We’ll have a “first look” video soon, but we were caught off guard by the early release.
Check the Cargo Hold! (What’s Included)
Gotta start with the best stuff. There’s an insane amount of content.
- Two episodes = 80 normal levels are available at launch. We begin at the beginning: Naboo Invasion and Escape to Tatooine. Each episode has two sides: Bird (light) and Pork/Pig (dark). Each side has 20 normal levels! Quick math: 20 × 2 × 2 = 80! Walkthroughs for all levels.
- You must start your journey on the Bird side of Naboo Invasion. (Levels numbered B1-# for “Bird, Episode 1”)
- The Pork side of Naboo Invasion unlocks after accumulating 20 stars. (Levels numbered P1-# for “Pork, Episode 1”)
- When you complete Naboo Invasion, you can pick which side of Escape to Tatooine to join. The other side unlocks after accumulating 20 stars there. (Levels numbered B2-# and P2-#)
- 8 “Side” levels! Hidden in each side of each episode is a treasure map. Obtaining this map opens a 2-level side quest, which is some cases is a shortcut! The levels are not required to earn “Complete an Episode” achievements, but 3-starring IS required to earn “3-star an Episode” achievements. (Levels numbered B1-S#, P1-S#, …)
- Reward Chapter! This is pretty interesting. Each character has a points-accumulated achievement associate with it. When you reach that threshold, that character’s level is unlocked in the Reward Chapter.
Important Note: Bird Bonus Points are not credited to this counter. It must be in-game points done by that character’s fling, and points do not accrue unless you complete the level.
Secondary Note: Not all levels of the Reward Chapter can be unlocked by normal gameplay at time-of-launch. In fact, not all levels will be unlockable via normal gameplay ever (Luke Skywalker, for example) since they are only available by TELEPOD or Character Swap usage. See more below. - Bird Credits, TELEPODs and Character Swap! We’ll talk more about this below, since it’s very extensive.
- Achievements! These are now listed both in GameCenter (iOS only) and in-game! This way, all users can compete! There’s a massive 67 to begin the saga!
- Ability Label: Since there are so many birds and so many abilities, each character in the lineup has a little label next to it. This identifies what that character’s ability is: A small lightsaber handle, a shockwave, a laser blaster, etc.
Choose Your Destiny! Who Will You Join?

- Anakin Episode I and his missile-riding daredevil-ness.

Characters Not Yet Featured
More characters will be made available in later updates to the app, and some are only available by using TELEPODs or Character Swaps (more below). While we won’t list them all here, they include Darth Vader, General Grievous, Padme, Mace Windu, and many many more.
Be sure to check out our Star Wars 2 Character Reveal videos to see all their abilities in action!
The Shop: TELEPODs, Character Swaps, and More
If you don’t like the character lineup you’ve been given for a particular level, don’t worry! With the technology of TELEPODs and “Character Swaps”, you can now set your own attack lineup! This feature has actually been requested for years in the Angry Birds community, and it’s interesting to see how Rovio has included it.
So let’s talk about how exactly this works:
- TELEPODs are physical figurines that you can place on a stand over your device’s front-facing camera (if applicable). The stand has a small magnifying glass and the figurine has a QR-code. Clicking the “TELEPOD” button in-game (looks like a T roughly) will use the camera to read the code, then BAM that character appears in the slingshot! Note that you can only import a like-side character: Pork-for-pork or bird-for-bird.
- Bird Credits are earned periodically through normal gameplay, or can be purchased from the shop. Prices are 150 credits for $1.99, 400 for $4.99, 1000 for $9.99, 2250 for $19.99, 6000 for $49.99, and 15000 for $99.99. (Worried? Be sure to see our post about restricting In-App Purchases.)
- Character Swaps are used to switch the active character in the slingshot for any character that you have “swaps” available for (on the same side)! These uses come in many shapes and sizes. They are earned in-game by completing certain achievements, can be purchased from the shop, or activated using TELEPODs. When purchasing from the shop, you can choose to purchase 10, 30, 100, or unlimited for any specific character. Note that the credit cost varies by character, with Darth Vader costing 3500 credits for unlimited.
There are also some restrictions on how these items can be used:
- You may only TELEPOD-in a certain character once per level, but you can use multiple TELEPODs per level. As an example, if you start with a level of all Jango Fett, you can one-by-one change the lineup to go Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Droideka. You cannot use TELEPODs to make the lineup 3 Darth Vaders in a row, however.
- You may use in-game Character Swaps without such a restriction. That is, you can use in-game Character Swaps to make a level of all Jango Fett into all Darth Vaders. Mwahahaha!!!
- Using a TELEPOD temporarily changes the in-game counter for that character. This seems to disappear after some time, however, and these character swaps appear to be stored in the Cloud. We tried turning on Airplane Mode and we lost them, but we will try playing around a bit more to get some more info.
Which Systems Are Go? Compatibility and Pricing
* Please be aware that this info may change at anytime. Beware of fakes! Only download apps published by Rovio Entertainment Ltd.
- iOS: Angry Birds Star Wars II is a universal app for iOS and costs $0.99 USD. It is compatible with iPhone 3GS+, iPod Touch 3rd+ generations, and all iPads. You must have iOS 4.3 or higher, and yes, it does include iPhone 5 support!
- Android (Google Play & Amazon Appstore): The Android app costs $0.99 USD and requires Android 2.3 or higher. Specific device requirements may vary and users should contact Rovio with questions pertaining to their particular device. There is also an ad-supported free version of the app.
- Windows 8 Phone: The Windows 8 Phone app costs $0.99 USD and has a plethora of device requirements. See the Windows Phone Store for all the details.
Notice for PC/Mac users: PC and Mac are not included with initial launch. Until recently, Rovio has made no statements about the future of these platforms. On the 19th, Rovio tweeted: “#AngryBirdsStarWarsII is now the #1 app on the @AppStore. We’re also working on a PC/Mac version!” No word yet on ETA, but it will likely be some time. Released for PC on 24 October; no ETA yet for Mac. We also suspect that TELEPODs will not be compatible with desktop platforms.

Rovio has given us permission to include the following universal link. If anyone is having trouble finding the app, try:
http://rov.io/downloadabsw2
CC: @bonneypattycat @78RPM @laurafj @Oobgular
That did it, thanks much.
Thanks for the link @amslimfordy couldn’t find it on UK App Store but this took me right there. Downloading now cheers!
Thanks, this works!
@amslimfordy – Thanks sir!
I hope Rovio doesn’t have any fallout over that “2” vs “II” deal. You probably know better than most how the blame game works on the internet…
Cannot find it at the iOS App Store :(
@bonneypattycat Search “Angry Birds Star Wars”. Click on the title to open more details. Scroll to the bottom and select “Developer Info”. Last one in the list.
found!! thank you! you’re work is awesome!
@AMslimfordy, followed your instructions, still do not see it. Maybe they are rolling it out so we don’t crash their server ;)
Neeeeever mind! LOL, I am blind as a bat! My AB scores are a flippin’ miracle!
It’s there alright! :-)
This also works very similar for Google Play.
– Click Apps.
– Search Angry Birds Star Wars.
You should see two in the list.. the .99 cent version, and a free one.. both from Rovio Entertainment LTD.
I tried clicking on Games and searching, but II doesn’t show up that way for some reason.. maybe Play hasn’t updated that search listing.
The version on Android says it’s from Activision and has questionable content in the game description.
@rdnzlrips82 Try searching again. I now see one with Rovio Entertainment Ltd.
@amslimfordy I restarted S3 and searched again before seeing this. It was way down on the list. Looks like there are at least two fake apps. They aren’t claiming to be walkthrough apps either.
In game achievements even on Android. Wonder if this will link to Google Play Games soon?
Slim, iOS 7 came also today (just installing), not tomorrow.
Thanks, removed “tomorrow”.
@amslimfordy – I think something “just ain’t right” on Google Play. I’m pretty sure that AB Star Wars 2 is bogus and potentially harmful. But there’s a AB Star Wars II that looks right. But the availability for that seems to come and go – sometimes it says something like no such item and other times it comes up as normal. That’s the 99c version. I do think the Activision one at least has something wrong with it.
@78RPM Only download apps from Rovio Entertainment Ltd.
That just links you to the Play Store.
I’m just going to wait until at least tomorrow.
When I searched Google Play for Angry Birds Star Wars II, it came right up, but it didn’t come up under either Angry Birds or Angry Birds Star Wars, so you might want to search that way.
On Android, there seems to be a 3 of them: The full version for 99 cents, a free version, and another free version of the full game, from Activision Studios, not Rovio. Is the Activision one legit, or is it a virus, similar to when Space came out?
Sorry, I didn’t refresh to see the new comments. Seems It’s already been addressed.
Wow, Slim, you almost got all stars? :-0
Yes. No one should ever question my ability ever again. I did all of that in like 45 seconds ;)
You are even rank 1 in Game Center! Congrats!
@AMSlimfordy — Come-on, confess. You must have been given a pre-release, right?
Little ol’ ABN given a pre-release of the biggest game of the year? No way! Never confess @amslimfordy.
@BirdLeader — That sounds like guilty as charged to me! : D
Day 2 of AB SW II and Slim is still no 1 in Game Center (among those people who did not cheat and enter fake scores).
Not on Amazon yet? I thought Amazon was android.
@habink Google Play is the more common Android app distributor.
I do not yet know what to make of Telepods and character swaps. I love the simplicity of the older games, but I will give this a try. So far the graphics are great!
Okay, after learning more about Telepods, I will be giving this game a pass. Don’t get me wrong, I think for a lot of people, especially those who are more into games than I, will LOVE SW2. It just isn’t for me. Lots of good things about the game, but I can’t see toting around my characters when I am on the go. Yeah, it is kinda cool how a character can be zapped into the game, but I would prefer being able to select my character of choice from a list within the game. Thank you anyway, Rovio :)
Oh. I CAN buy the characters without the Telepods. Still… not sure if I will be playing. Hmmmm.
I think it was a good decision to allowe all scores on the leader board. Nevertheless I try to 3 star all levels without power-ups.
@chriss I’m 3 starring the levels without PUs too. Once I do that, I’ll go back and try to find any bonus things I haven’t gotten already. Only then will I try to figure out the character swap stuff.
At least this way I will get used to all the new powers of the characters, and it won’t be quite so overwhelming.
We’re doing the same thing. Our initial videos will be “clean/pure” just to prove that everything can be done without Swaps.
That’s a very good idea. I will do the same.

Kind of anticlimactic now, but here is the complete image of all the characters that I have been making by cropping them from the intro videos and pasting them onto the silhouettes image that was released when the game was first announced.
Great picture! I hope use background my phone!
Holy cow, that is a lot of characters to keep track of (and their special powers). I feel overwhelmed!
Nice work indeed you did. Now the adventure shall begin!
Great job @sntrooper I followed all the way forward and I congratulate you, I put the picture on my phone and it looks great … really, thank you so much…
Wow a Day earlier. Big surprise. Thank you Rovio :-)
is there an HD version coming soon for iPads???
The existing app is a universal app for iPhone and iPad. It just doesn’t have “HD” in its name.
Do our scores automatically sync between iPhone and ipad due to this?
No, sorry. Will have to wait for Rovio Accounts.
I gather from your comments cloud sync is NOT included in AB SW 2. I was really hoping it would be as I hope to have a new iPhone soon and currently play on Android or ipad and don’t want to lose my progress.
The ABO syncs perfectly between ipad and Android phone. I do hope cloud sync plans for the other titles have not been abandoned.
How do you all keep progress from iPhone to new iPhone? With itunes, etc?
@martyedwards See our complete guide: http://angrybir.de/abbackup
ty for your very quick reply. I wonder if access to the lua files, etc., will be harder with ios7? In order to change phones, etc. Hopefully cloud sync will soon be part of all AB titles.
Thanks again… love the site.
Now that I have completed the first boss level on the “Bird” Side, I have this to say…
The gameplay is incredible. The graphics are extremely beautiful. And I wish ABSW1 was this good when it came out. Thank you, Rovio for bringing me back to a galaxy far, far away with a sick, sick game. Two thumbs up.
Shame it’s the prequel game that looks this good :(
Going great guns so far ripsy!
@hinarei The prequel movies were the same. Until, the BluRays came out. :D
One day too early?! Well who wants to complain? :D
What is a difference between paid and free version for android? I can’t see any. There are no advertisements in a free one.
Do you use an Android phone or an Android tablet?
I think I have an idea why.
Android phone
After playing a little, I must admit that I’m a little overwhelmed. My main platform being PC, I never had achievements before. So, I’m lost between achievements, numerous (very numerous!) characters, their powers, additional levels, stuff to find within levels (maps I understand, they unlock different levels, but I found a shiny golden thingy in the second porc side level and can’t figure out what it is)… It’s kind of a lot to take in.
Agreed. Anyone know what the gold flowerey thing is? I’ve found it in a few levels.
“Collectable Items”
Do you have a list of all the collectable items? Are the “shiny golden thingy” and the gold “flowery thingy” mentioned above the same. Are they the same as the gold flower you get when you collect a bonus box?
We’re calling them “Bonus Boxes” because that’s what we think people might call them. The walkthroughs are on YouTube. We’re trying here, but…
Hey slim, congrats on being number 1 on game center for this game! Sal9 and bird leader too!
The icons of the achievements in Game Center on iOS 7 look horrible. I recommend everybody not to install iOS 7. Even the new Game Center icon itself is horrible.
Does anybody know if this design will also come to Macs?
Best-game-ever!
@amslimfordy: Some achievements seem to disappear in-game when you got them. Or do you see “Level Padawan” or “Galactic Squad” or “Star Buster” in-game? I only see them in Game Center.
Hm.. And in-game I have the achievements “Give In To Porkness” and “Pork Side Opened”, but I don’t have them in game Center.
And Slim, do you know what the difference is between the achievement Use The Force and Give In To Porkness?
@chriss Those should be in the “Overall” tab, right? I haven’t checked.
@amslimfordy: Pls forget my second post here. I found out the answers myself.
Concerning my first post: yes, you are right, only the “overall” achievements disappear.
And it’s only in Geme Center where you can see all “overall” achievements. In the game you just see the next steps.
There goes all college work out the window
What are the hidden bonus boxes good for? What about the other different things listed above?
Achievements and their associated prizes.
Hey don’t know if anyone else has seen this , but if you have the telepods and when you unlock a bird/pig in the game then leave they aren’t there anymore and I have to put them all on again! Is anyone else having these problems? Or @amslimfordy is this soposed to happen?
“In fact, not all levels will be unlockable via normal gameplay ever (Luke Skywalker, for example) since they are only available by TELEPOD or Character Swap usage.”
This isn’t going to be tremendously annoying at all :|
I don’t mind paying to unlock special eps (like PotJ or DZ) but this note looks like extra incentive to plough through Character Swap-only levels using as few credits as avianly possible :)
I’ve not got very far yet so don’t know how this will unfold, but will see how I get to grips (or gripes!) with the game before passing judgement.
Wow what an amazing post by the staff. Jammed pack with info and more data than my brain can assimilate for this one game at this one setting. Seems like SW-2 has a number of different features, birds, pigs, levels and PUs that will keep one playing for the next six months. Must say that it is quite a lot to take in. Maybe this game will activate Slim’s Lessons again. They were very useful and provided clarity on a number of different subjects.

“Toons tv is coming to web”
for android users like me with older, smaller memory devices, you need to have AT LEAST 50 MEGS FREE or it will give you an invalid package error. before playing, be sure to move to SD card and IMMEDIATELY REBOOT YOUR DEVICE or you will run out of system memory.
it loaded fine for me. gonna try playing it and let yall know if there are any problems with older devices. which, in my case, is an LG Optimus S
6.3 million on the first pass. I’m done for the day.
And I’m liking the Pork Side levels better too.
@AMslimfordy All my Bird Credits where gone when I started the game again but my stars where still there
And none of my Bird Swapes where saved
Sorry I have no information to offer you. These maybe saved in the Cloud but I’m not sure.
