Bad Piggies Road Hogs Level R-1 requires a time of under 25 seconds to earn 3 stars, or 30 seconds to earn 2 stars. The Road Hogs levels are pure time trials and, in general, are very challenging. Our contraption uses four engines, two fireworks, a soda bottle, and an airplane propeller. We do a little toggling of the general motors, but more important is the use of fireworks and soda at times that won’t flip the vehicle!
If you have a different strategy for completing this level feel free to leave a comment below.
Alternative High Speed Solution
The following contraption uses five metal frames, three engines, two airplane propellers, two yellow tail fins, and an umbrella. You will fly this vehicle to the finish line by carefully toggling the engines. Thanks to ianxofour for sharing this ingenious approach.
The three stars in the video below was achieved in 00:22:08.
(I think the website deleted my previous posts cuz it thought I was a spambot. Anyhoo…)
R1, R3, R4, and R6 can all be done EASILY (with 3 stars) done by flying:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9T2rjD9cBY
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing. I have to admit, I have fun creating the contraptions I made, but if you’re just looking to quickly 3 star each this is a good way to go.
Yes it works, but does it obey the laws of physics?
Granted, I’m not a pilot, so I’m hoping someone in ABN, who is a pilot can weigh in on this.
I figured out the use of the tail assembly to create lift, and I used 2 tail sections facing the same way in my contraption linked to comment below.
But, can you really get lift from a tail section facing the wrong direction?
Yes, I do know that AB and presumably Bad Piggies uses a real physics engine to run the game, but they could program the tails so that they provide lift in either direction — maybe?
Aren’t the horizontal pieces on the tail shaped like wings?
Well, the tail assembly consists of vertical and horizontal stabilizers. The horizontal stabilizers provide lift, and as long as there is sufficient angle of attack they will provide lift even when mounted backwards. It wouldn’t be very efficient aerodynamically but at least it is possible in principle.
@IanXO4 — I like your outside flying approach, but I just can’t seem to get accustomed to using the right had to go left and vice versa. Is there some trick to get the propeller symbols to be on the opposite sides?
Should be hand, not had. Grr!
Thank you for amazing work on creating videos. Just a quick question, I played and three stared all levels except 30 new ones from Flight in the Night, do you recomend playing them first in order to get more pieces for contraptions or I should already have enough pieces for completing Road Hogs? I am really sorry for my clumsy language, I hope it is understandable.
as for these levels, they are such fun. First vehicle I made was the safest one, I ended task in 34 second, my second one was faster, very simple one 4 metal boxes and two engines and I ended with 28.30 second. Sure, I knew I should use rockets or maybe soda cans to get it go faster but just couldn’t figure out when to activate them – thanks I’ll try your solution.
@cosmo2503 See comments by AustinRHL and me on the announcement page. You can tell if you have locked parts, I think. However I’m not positive if there are more that show up, since I don’t have all stars.
There’s another flying approach that works on levels R1, R3, R4 and AR6. It’s not super easy but you get very quick times:
Build a mini helicopter with two vertical wooden boxes, a propeller on top, piggie, and a V8 engine. Place it at the top of the building area and place an umbrella under it (on the ground, not attached to the contraption.
Start engine just after starting game. The copter will fall lightly onto the umbrella and tilt ever so slightly to the right (if you time the engine start right). If you get the angle right, you will fly over every obstacle. You won’t see your contraption during most of the flight so timing when to cut the engine can be a bit tricky, bit after a few tries you learn to judge your ground speed and use clues on the ground on when to cut the engine. The object is get a ballistic trajectory to right on the finish line.
My best time on R1: 00:14.21.
Wow! I have no idea how you devised that strategy, but it works brilliantly! Through blind luck, on my very first attempt, the contraption flew straight to the finish line – I didn’t even have to cut the engine. (The time was 14.27, for whatever it’s worth.) I personally prefer driving, but it’s always entertaining to see an approach that comes completely out of left field.
:) I finished Road Hogs the conventional way and came here to check what others had come up with. I read @IanXO4’s post that there was a way to fly through the levels and without watching his video I tried to come up with a solution. So it was IanXO4’s inspiration although the solution is completely different.
lol nice idea! :P 14:95
@f91jsw — A couple more hints please? My helicopter keeps nosediving into the first big hill. I take it the pig is above the engine, right? What angle do you take off at? Where in set of boxes do you start, right / left / middle?
Well, I finally got 14.53 with @f91sjw’s method. To answer my own questions: pig was on top; important to take off as close to vertical as possible; started on far right.
So to answer @cosmo2503‘s questions about low scores — Sub 14 sec should definitely be possible.
Hi @mnvla2 I am not sure that I understand what contraption @f91jsw recomended, could you upload pic to your album, thanks for mention.
It sounds like @cosmo2503 figured out what @f91jsw was describing, but in case anyone else wants to know, the following link takes you to my interpretation of what the vehicle looks like.

@mvnla2 thanks, I figured out, but still my time isn’t that great (it’s over 16 sec. I didn’t know which one engine is V8 and where to position contraption but I experimented and made it fly to the finish line (actually landed on the hill above and rolled down to finish line which took those extra seconds).
Yes, that’s what it looks like.
@f91jsw got it! Brilliant idea, so “out of box” thinking.
Great strat @f91sw it took a few times have made a video of that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpDD-PjwHY0&feature=youtu.be
Thanks, @f91jsw Excellent idea! I’ve got 15.05 secs. Need more tries :)
Check out damonthelawyer’s contraption further down in the comments. That has pushed the times down to the 10-11s region.
Well, this is not a record-breaker, but does get 3* without rockets, etc. Got to 24.62 with this.

On Game Center there are a few really short times in top of the leaderboard. They might be hacked but I wonder if there is a strategy that hasn’t been posted here? The best time possible with the mini helicopter approach seems to be around 14 s, maybe just a little under. I’ve experimented with hooking on rockets on the helicopter but it becomes very hard to fly and even when I’ve succeeded I haven’t got any sub-14 s times.
I haven’t got down to the 8 second mark but I managed 13.08 (which is top 50 on iOS) with a highly evolved basic plane:
tail wooden block w/engine wooden block w/engine wooden block w/V8 propeller
gap tail wooden block w/bird propeller
and then a launching block underneath. The trick to sub 15 seconds is maximise power to weight while balancing the control/launch issue. I don’t know about going below that!
@DamoTheLawyer — Congrats on the great score! Very interesting. However I’m having problems understanding your description. How about joining ABN so you can post a picture in your personal ABN album. I guess you could also send us a link to a photo-sharing website.
BTW — Did you see / try MattOG’s device described below?
Hiya, pictures:
The plane: http://angrybir.de/Zr1Sj8
Mostly about making the launch more relable and controllable. Basically hit everything to launch and use the umbrella for control.
As for @MattOG’s idea; genius! However, I found it very tricky to fly so tried these instead:
http://angrybir.de/13FVxG7
Which is still fairly tricky, although the basic launch is easier. It got me as far as 12.02 though and I think it’s probably got more time in it that that but my best time today is one of these:
http://angrybir.de/Zr2bKL
Which is much easier to fly: Bottles, engines, jets and you’re off! While @f91jsw is right about the power the bottles give, they help a lot with the launch and that means more hits than misses (although it can still be as slow as 16.xx if you fly too high). That leaves me at 10.86…
Plane: http://angrybir.de/Zr1Sj8
Evolved: @mattog: http://angrybir.de/13FVxG7

@amothelawyer Thanks for the photos. Will have to try some more.
I’ve got 10.68 s with your last contraption. I’ve experimented without cola bottles but as you say, very hard to launch at the right angle.
I think that all 10 s times on Game Center could be legit. I’m not sure about sub 10s though unless someone comes up with still another evolution.
I’ve hit the same wall at 10.65!
I can’t up the power/weight any more so if the times are genuine then there’s a whole concept I’m missing…
Been trying a variation of @MattOG‘s strat, with and without @F91jsw‘s umbrella — One hot rod engine and 2 blue rockets. So far no luck (even completing), but someone with more skill might be able to make it work.
Actually, it’s pretty much a cross between f91jsw’s and MattOG’s strats: Vehicle is 2 wood boxes with pig in top and engine in bottom. Propeller on top and 2 blue rockets strapped to top box.
11s is possible using cola bottles and blue rockets with my strat. Will post a vid in the morning if i can get it again.
I got 12.64 s with your strat: two propellers, one V8, one normal engine, two blue rockets and two cola bottles.
I found adding two mini green motors on the far right and far left of the T helped with the speed and accuracy, though once I hit 11s I stopped testing. Some good alternative strats going on above which I may look at too!
I got 11.18 with green motors but no cola bottles.
@austinrhl, @mvnla2, I got 12.05 s with @austinrhl‘s contraption from R4. Two propellers, one V8, one normal engine, two rockets (no cola bottles). I think sub 12 is possible with this solution. I came in slightly too low and crashed into the hump just before the finish line. The pig kept going to the finish line but I probably lost a tenth of a second or so.
It seems that adding cola bottles is no advantage. The small extra boost you get is offset by the added weight.
” @austinrhl‘s contraption from R4.” I mean R3 of course.
Now 11.99 s!
All road hog (road levels) can be completed with teh same machine –
*3 wooden boxes.
*Piggy in middle.
*Big engine at front.
*Big engine, or if not available middle sized engine, at rear.
*Wooden tailplane.
*Two propellers at the front – one pointing forward, one up.
You don’t even need wheels as the lighter the better. Although if tail wheels are available I suggest using one on the front and back box. Switch front propeller on, toggle the up propeller to gain height. – watch the piggy zoom!!!
Time R1 – 19.25 secs. R-6 37.56secs
Rob
My best times on R1/R4/R6 come from a setup like this — with one slight variation. Instead of wheels or nothing on the bottom, I put fans to turn the plane into a bit of a hovercraft. Gives an extra smidge of lift and stability.
A simple sub 25 second contraption for R-1
Tail plane + Metal Box with V8 Engine + Metal Box with Pig + Empty Metal Box + Propellor
Space + Tail Wheel + Space + Power Wheel
A contraption that can make it about 23-24 seconds. 2 Metal Squares, V8 Motor on the left, Pig in the right. Aeroplane wheel in most left and bicycle wheel below pig. Move contraption to the most right. Avoid jumping to high when crossing hills.
same like the one in the video but it only has one big engine and one tiny motor and its 3 cubes long .like a biplane and only one metal wheel in the front not a motorized one and the tiny motor is in the back and the big engine is the front and the pig is in the middle
Coincidentally, by editing the second vehicle by adding two more engines, I achieved the same time as shown on the video: 00:22:08.
By using same contraption as in “Alternative High Speed Solution” video, I got 19.43 secs :)
* And I think that contraption shown in second video is easier to drive than first one !
I got 10.01 seconds with this contraption
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?feature=em-upload_owner&v=Yiayr9G14pE&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYiayr9G14pE%26feature%3Dem-upload_owner
I reckon a sub 10 second time is possible
Got 9.98 seconds using this awesome method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LSvxBu8I5s The creator of the video reached 8.98 seconds with Power-ups.
I’ve since managed 8.33 with power ups, it hasn’t shown up on the leaderboard though :(
9.5 to 9.6 is possible without a turbo
I have made a simple, fast vehicle that i can get 25.95 seconds with.
Put 2 iron boxes next to eachother horizontally, put the pig in one, and a v8 or v4 in the other. Put the motor wheel at the front, facing down, and a regular wheel at the back, facing back behind the vehicle.
I have yet to try it with a turbo
Just a side note, if you’re into collecting desserts, this is one of the best levels for that, with around 5 spawning each run. Make a simple box cart like this
Top 3 rows – blank
X,X,X,Pig,Pulley Engine,Box,Turbo Engine (all in metal boxes)
X,X,X,Metal Wheel, Metal Wheel,Power Wheel,Power Wheel
Just turn it on and let it go. Stop the throttle for the occasional one you’ll jump over at high speed, but otherwise, you can earn 5 desserts every 30 seconds. Oh and this cart will easily beat the 30 second star.
I put 3 wood blocks atop of 3 more wood blocks. Then, on the back put 1 tail
on the lower level.Next, I put 1 big engine in the front, and behind that, I
put 1 medium engine , then, I left 1 spot open for the pig, put 1 more medium motor in the top front, then put 2 small motors in the top behind that, then,
I put the pig in the empty spot, and finally, put 1 umbrella in the top back,
and 1 in the top front, put two propellers in the front, and put 1 wooden
wheel in the bottom front, and one in the front. It is not the fastest, but
can fly okay if you can control it.
