All you have to do is turn off the engine as soon as your front wheel hits the ground and turn it back on the instant your wheel hits the star box. You can move the contraption to the left or right and achieve the same results.
I prefer two build the plane with the three wooden boxes supporting the king pig in the back and the three metal boxes in an L shape in the front, so that the wing and second propeller are receded by one column relative to the front of the plane. This design allows you simply to switch the plane on and have it fly cleanly to the finish, which is quite pleasant to watch.
