Ship Stats – Mast Confusion

I am confused by the ship stats. I understand how the ship numbers are determined by adding the ship values and each of the bird values.

Attack 7000
Shield 4000
Heart 5500

When in a ship battle I would expect my health to be the shield plus the hearts, so 9500 in this case. What I see is just the 5500. The shield doesn’t seem to matter.

If this is true, what is the point of enhancing the Mast of the ship to 3 stars?

@napmaster Health and Defense values are completely different – Defense value is earned through matching & then added as extra Health points whereas Health is a starting value.
If you upgrade your mast, your matches during a fight will earn you more Defense points than before, and THAT’S THE POINT of upgrading your mast.

Thanks Mighty Red. The shield part clearly had me confused. Time to spend some coins and get my mast upgraded.
