Spells – or decreasing pool of spells w/o selecting any

Is it just me, or is rovio using players spells in the games?

ie; I open the daily challenge, select no spells for 1st level, then I am ‘given’ a spell during the play of that level.

Go on to the next level, and the spells panel pops up and it appears the spell(s) is was given in 1st level have decreased.

Did rovio start using players pools of spells for the ‘free’ or I thought ‘free’ spells?

This also happens in the island episodes.
