i do not quite understand why my AB-scores other than those for mine & dine have been removed. they were only 3 (was trying out only some of the levels seriously, for lack of time to play all), but highscores. in the faq it only says to enter at least an episode worth of scores, which i certainly did (mine & dine).

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

“Random” scores will often be removed. It’s nothing personal, but a stray score that happens to be a top score won’t typically survive.

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9495 points
By to mock a mockingbird (@vuelva)

thank you for the quick reply, but then i do not understand the text in the faq on entering scores: “We suggest entering at least one episode worth of scores. Entering stray, random scores is commonly viewed as suspicious behavior, making any Top Scores seem less credible.”. it was my understanding from this text that entering at least one episode worth of scores (which i did, m&d) would prevent any of my other scores from being considered as stray, random scores?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Entering an entire episode is fine, but then entering a single score on a completely different episode is — sort of by definition — stray.

Rank: Sling God with 28590 points

@vuelva — It case Slim wasn’t clear, by “enter an episode worth of scores” I think what they really mean is don’t enter a single score in an episode, enter at least several. You must have some score on the other levels, even if you weren’t playing seriously. I guess we won’t be seeing you much at AB Anonymous.

still curious how scores (not) being suspicious is related to their convexity in rovio level-name-space,

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9495 points
By to mock a mockingbird (@vuelva)

to make sense of things (discarding stray scores but keeping episodes), i was thinking of R with lebesgue measure identifying stray scores with singletons but episodes with intervals.

suppose i were to say that for making a living i prove theorems (e.g. on combinatory logic as described in smullyan’s book … to mock a mockingbird), and teach stuff like logic, programming languages, formal methods, mathematics, while (because of) holding a chair, would that satisfy @mvnla2‘s curiosity?

to me the fun part of playing AB is thinking of an optimal strategy for a level (btw since i won’t be playing in the near future i’ve posted some more of my M&D strategies) and making it work, which i find is quite similar to trying to prove a theorem (e.g. in the need to be stubborn; proving a theorem may take years or more). my best finds thusfar i consider to be the optimal strategies for the M&D levels of AB free, in particular those for VII-1 and VII-3 (see my respective comments there; no power ups in AB free yet luckily).

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I’m OK with that definition. It’s a bit of a stretch on Lebesgue measure as the sum of finitely many consecutive singletons will constitute an interval, but I’m willing to accept the theory, haha.

I’ve been on the this board for nearly a year and I think it’s very well done. Like others I do have my doubts about some high scores and the fact that a small number of players dominate; seemingly managing the impossible, time and time again. But I have to temper that view with the fact that I have a few highs and that I’m in the top 20. Probably more work is required on my part! I take it for what it is. A bit of fun and if there are people elaborating their achievements then so be it.

Rank: Boss Hog with 14310 points
By Pointdexter5 (@pointdexter5)

I understand your point. I have been a long term member as well, and a long-term top 10 player. For some high scores you need pure luck, ending up 10k and more above other scores. Now, when one player hits that spot, I can respect that, but if it’s the same player or players time and time again, I am suspicious too. Some levels I have played hundreds of times, maybe even thousands of times, trying to hit that lucky shot, and I think I’m a fairly decent shooter, so obviously it even surprises me to see the same players hit that luck time and time again. But in the end, nothing I can do about that. The only thing I can control are my own scores and my integrity. I have never used a fake score, never hacked my game/scores, nor have I ever even tried a power-up. And I generally try to make mid-game screen shots in case somebody would question a score. After the fact screen shots prove nothing to me, as it does not show how the score was achieved.

My only advice is to just keep playing, and keep playing honestly. In each competition there are those who play honestly, and those who cheat. You can only control yourself.

Rank: Out of this World with 2925 points

I took me almost 2 years to get myself in the top 10. It’s chasing players like @pointdexter5 and other honest players that make it fun. I really do think the majority of players here are honest and the mods do a great job picking out the weeds. There is only one top score that I strongly believe is fake but the player uploaded a screen shot to proove him/herself so what can you do? At least when you get a top score you know for sure it’s legit and you know you even beat the cheaters! I’ve had some top scores but never been questioned once about them. Perhaps it’s because I do my best to help out and give tips and new strategies whenever I can. Just keep flinging those birds!

I think most of the top players on ABN are legit. bastieroxxor, ernor for example are routinely posting their strats (often on other sites) are not only great shooters but are dedicating a lot of time to play.

I think overall ABN is doing a great job at filtering scores, there are couple high score that are suspicious but not that many (and I had my share of jaw dropping fallout so who am I to complain).

One interesting thing I look at is the speed of progression of a player score especially for the top players. I average around 4-5k per day lately (probably around 1k an hour ;) ), I had recently an amazing day with almost 20k when playing danger above but this is a once a year event. When I see a player climbing too fast it is almost always fishy.

I have been playing and highly enjoying AB Star Wars way too much. Need to start entering my scores to see how they rank compared to others, so I can improve where needed. I have to say this is one of the coolest and cleanest versions of AB after the original 6 worlds. Some of the later episodes/worlds were not as popular and/or Facebook-clones, so I have to think this had been planned for a long time. Let’s jut hope they don’t muck it up with power-ups.

My AB scores may sink a bit this way, but I always tend to come back when I sink too much.

Rank: Sling God with 38225 points

I’m still a little concerned about the genuiness of some high scores and, the often, poor proof, that they have been attained fairly. The old adage of “if something appears too good to be true, then it probably isn’t” is a good starting point! Very often a screen shot of a restarted level with a high score showing is all that is offered. Well that in no way proves that the score was obtained fairly. I would like to see in future certainly in the case of a high or near high score, a picture of the closing screen. At least that shows (subject to photoshopping of course) that no power ups were used. Also, and sometimes this can be difficult, perhaps a closing screen shot just before the total score one. I try to do this as a matter of routine (I don’t always get it, particularly on my iPhone, which can be a bit temperamental) if my score is particularly high. I’m always happy and smug even! to share high score screen shots and particularly where I think it will help others. Any thoughts?

Amen @steviep147, that is what I have been saying for a long time. A screen shot after the game, or on the next playing of a level are meaningless to me. I have stated that before in several updates. With hacks and PUs, it would be so easy to fake a score and then take a screen print to make it look kosher. But I guess part of this relies on the honor system. If you have to cheat to get a high score, or to attain a ranking on this board, you have to be able to live with that, live with the fact that you are just a phony. I find it sad actually if people would sink to such levels, but I’m sure they do. I make many screen shots when I reach higher level scores, and it’s mostly in-game, where the birds still have to accumulate, or just finished, and you can see the destruction, as well as the fact that my PU option is disabled. It would be nice if everybody could get screen prints that way. Sometimes the platform used is limiting, but that should not be the general excuse all the time. My $0.02

I had a high score, once, and it stood for a few days. So I think most people post legitimate scores. But I have trouble believing everything I see. The dispersion of results at the high end doesn’t always seem credible. There are many cases where the top score is way above the second score, by a much larger margin than second over third, or third over fourth. Perhaps some people are posting scores from different versions of the game.

@amslimfordy, one thing I really like is the fact that you can sort your scores for a particular episode by “Rank” or “Diff High”. This really helps me when trying to improve in one particular episode. It would be nice to have these sort option in the classic screen that lists all your scores over the entire game. There is no real sort option there, and I see value in seeing which score over the complete game is the worst and the best, as well as the rank and also difference from high for such level.

Not sure how complicated of a database statement this would become, but I guess with a temp table containing all that data, it should be feasible. Thoughts?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@Kathy I’m not sure how easy that would be. Most notably, the page linked is not determined by who clicks it. It’s simply a link to that level’s leaderboard. If you’d like to know you’re rank, the personal leaderboard displays that.
*Add-on: If you see your rank, you can jump to the appropriate page next. We list 100 users per page, so if you’re rank is 234, you’re on Page 3.

@Pointdexter5 I’m not sure I understand. Do you mean being able to click “Rank” and have it sort all 300+ levels?

Rank: Boss Hog with 14310 points
By Pointdexter5 (@pointdexter5)

That is correct @amslimfordy. Currently there are two ways to view each episode score. One that shows the overall scores, averages and your individual scores. You can then see your user’s scores in a different screen in which you can sort by rank of by diff from high.
For the view that shows all 300+ levels, there is no such sort. I just think it would be nice to have this. I could probably copy/paste my scores in excel to sort them that way, but think it would be a nice feature to have automated.

I generally rank an episode by the “from high” column first, try to get my scores within 10k from high. I also consider rank, as I like to be in the top 100 on each level where possible. Once i feel most levels are close enough within or around 10k, I sort by rank. If im not in the top 100 and only 6k from the top, I know I can gain some points yet, even if it’s just a small amount. Some levels truly are pure luck, where you just have to get that one lucky occurrence of everything falling the right way. Those you want to do when you have tons of time to waste. The ones that take some technique and correct aim are more likely going to make you gain.

And then you just have to hope players like @bluestar_127 stay off your back (-; Have been trading places for the past few weeks now, and it looks like its going to keep going on for a while yet.

@kathy, when you go into an episode leaderboard, you just see scores, averages, highs and your scores. In the header above the scores however, you should see you overall score mentioned. When you click on that, you get a more personal view of the episode just for your user, with a ranking for each individual level, and also your distance from high. I myself simply play levels first for three stars and then above average, to get a feel for them. Then I return later (it may be months) to play them seriously (trying to find the best strategy and playing it in an optimal way) and then i play backward, starting from the last level of a world toward the first level, for no particular reason, just for fun.

But why I respond to this thread is that I thought that if you’re thinking along these lines, then it could be interesting (in nate silver-style) to be able to sort levels by eroi:`expected return on investment’. The scores and their distribution for a particular level combine with your own score for it to yield an expected effort to improve your score by 1k, or conversely an eroi (per time unit). The idea would be then to play the levels with the highest eroi first. (eroi’s should be comparable over levels; the amount of time required to achieve a better score does depend on the individual player of course).

This would combine basing yourself on rank, distance to top/average score as mentioned in this thread, into one heuristic for what level to play next. Of course you can compute things yourself from the data already on the site (and even reasonably efficiently if you’re willing to assume, say, a normal distribution)…

Just a thought. Don’t know whether it makes sense (am not a statistician) and it could make it very `professional’ so might spoil the fun.

Before I came to ABN, I managed to three star all the levels without watching any walkthroughs. I knew they were out there, but liked the challenge of doing it on my own. Then I made numerous passes, increasing my scores as much as possible until I felt like I couldn’t do much more without at least comparing my individual scores to others. After filling in all my scores here last September, at least a third of my scores were below average. That is when I started watching walkthroughs, and following tips by other ABN members.

My approach is similar to “to mock a mocking bird”‘s. Mostly I work on my worst standing scores, with the goal of getting at least into the top 100, hopefully the top fifty, then I move on. I don’t worry about getting a Top Score, but getting one is certainly a bonus! I also like to be at least within 10k of Top Score, but closer is always better ;)

After several years of lurking, I’ve finally posted my scores on this site.
I do have a question about the leader boards kept by Rovio.
They add the scores for Bad Piggies to the totals – why don’t they do the same for Surf and Turf?
Looking forward to commenting, if I ever have something useful to contribute.

Surf & Turf is listed as a Bonus, non-sequential episode. For that reason, just like Golden Eggs, it is not included in GameCenter’s Total Score leaderboard. We, however, keep them together.

Thank you.
On another matter, my score of 111600 on level 22-13 keeps getting removed. Why is that?
I know it’s an unusually high score but, like all my scores, it was obtained without power ups.
Am I doing something wrong?

If you could submit a screenshot and strategy, it’d be greatly appreciated. It helps re-confirm the score

Well I can send a screen shot Where do I send it? Of course that won’t prove there were no power-ups -and I don’ have a video.
As far as strategy is concerned, it was a week or two ago and all I remember is being really surprised.

OK I have a screen shot in my photos, but I’m not sure where to send it.

Welcome Jim. It’s because it’s 5k higher than anyone elses and this is a really tough level. Folk are perhaps understandably a bit suspicious of newcomers with very high scores. Don’t be disheartened. I think if you hold on to it for a while and show that you are genuine then it will be accepted and everyone will be trying to better it. They probably are already!

Thanks. I see people are getting closer to it.
Can you tell me how to submit a screen shot?

Click on your username here and then go to “Album”. Most devices can upload screenshots.

I believe the screen shot is now in my album. What do I do next?

Welcome Jim @whoosher! Congrats on the Top Score. In your album there is a link to the photo which you can paste into a post on the walk through page.

Perhaps not the good place to post my opinion. I read on facebook that there will be a sync tool to sync our scores. This is great, this is very great news. An old wish. I personally play these games on 2 Ipads. One at home, the other onr while I am travelling (read here: at work, hope my boss doesn’t read this post

This week is dragging but I only need 10 more points to jump into hyper space (Out of this World).

sorry for posting here, but wanted to report that i cannot send messages (or so it seems) @amslimfordy? more in particular, yesterday i wanted to reply to r-l-l’s message (the top one when going to his profile) but then i only got the `away’ screen; i then tried to send a message directly and also that failed (reported an error). i assumed it was temporary, but no change today. updating my scores was no problem though. what do i do wrong?

Are that user is in your friend list? Or you can send PM in forum.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@vuelva You can only message users who are on your Friends list (and anyone can message admins)

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9495 points
By to mock a mockingbird (@vuelva)

i now realise i knew that i could only send messages to friends. but what puzzles/d me, is that i was notified per e-mail of the mentioned message, saying:

“r-l-l replied to one of your updates:

To view your original update and all comments, log in and visit: https://www.angrybirdsnest.com/activity/p/128275/

but when i log in and visit there, by clicking the link, i am taken to an earlier exchange (between myself and pointdexter5) in which the message does not appear? hence the question, can i reply in some way to the message, and if so, how?

I got one of the new emails saying my top score on Surf and Turf had been beaten, only to find that there is no change at the top. What’s happening?

We can try to take a look. Could have been a mistaken corrected by the user.

@amslimfordy, we have a new user (asher) that signed up today and is already ranked in the top 10 of every episode entered, and many high scores. Could be legit, but may be worth looking into. No platform specified, unclear if user is aware on the no-powerup rule. I was notified as he broke one of my high scores, and I noticed he is ranked 2nd in ham’m’high, which I have been monitoring closely more recently.

I’ll take a look @PointDexter. Thanks for the ping.

I see the user disappeared. Just curious what was going on.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@Pointdexter5 (sorry I missed the 5 on the other one): I believe the vast vast majority of those scores were PU scores. I sent the user a message about them and removed the scores for the time being.

@amslimfordy: are there still synchronization issues? yesterday evening i entered several results. now, when signing in in abn, everything is fine, but signed out/from the outside only some of the results i entered seem to have been processed, e.g. both my new total scores for bad piggies and mine and dine are correctly shown in the leaderboard above, but only my individual scores of the former are correctly shown (for the latter the scores are those of 1 day ago), whereas i entered all my new scores in the same session. also sessions are off: from the outside my profile now says that i was active 18 hours, 28 minutes ago and my comments entered in that session are not displayed, whereas i am active now and was so last night, say 12 hours ago. (cleaned the cache of my browser, so it’s not that)
a minor (maybe related?) issue: clicking on the right arrows on the pictures added last night to my album takes you to the album overview , not to the next picture?
(just to inform you; this comment can be removed once you are)

Curious what the new ABO update tomorrow is going to bring. It appears red will get a special power. Curious and a bit worried it may extend beyond the new levels, as this would significantly impact the scores if all levels with a red bird would have a potential to be replayed with a new power. Similar to Star Wars and better light sabers.

Curious if anybody has any details yet.

@Pointdexter5 Rovio comments have suggested that RB’s ability will be exclusive to this episode. It’s not something I can swear to be that’s how they read to me.

Thanks for the update @amslimfordy. I’m curious what the new levels are going to be like. It’s been a while since we have had an update.

I was expecting the leaderboards to be impacted this morning. Seems like the new levels are scoreless, more like bad piggies in getting three stars. Less of a competition.

Exactly, @pointdexter5. This new update for ABO, Red’s Mighty Feathers, really belongs better in the Bad Piggies version and not in ABO…oh well. Some people will probably love Mighty Feathers, but I’m not a fan of Bad Piggies so….

@amslimfordy, Can you look into user DM Franco? It’s a new user on the PC platform that joined today and has for example 5 high scores in Birthday Party alone, one significantly above the previous high, which was set by me. Whenever one of my highs is broken, I look into the user, just to make sure it’s legit. It could be a legit player, just may need to provide proof.

Indeed some of the new scores seem just impossible (15k above previous highscore on level 9-12, 14k improvement for level 9-15, +13k for level 11-9 and so on).

Strange at least…

Can someone ask mudshark why he doesn’t enter a score for 17-15. Intriguing. A 140k + going begging.

remembered i had read this somewhere on ABN but didn’t remember where. my educated guess was that @pointdexter5 had asked the same question (for similar reasons probably :-) and looking through his profile found just now that my guess was correct. see
the discussion.
