A nice surprise update this morning to see that Angry Birds v2.2.0 now includes the second chapter of Surf and Turf! The update has so far been released on iOS, PC, and Android via the Amazon Appstore and Google Play, with more platforms coming soon. These beach-themed levels are exactly what is needed if you are stuck working, but wanting to be on a nice tropical vacation. If you need help with any of these new levels be sure to check out our 3 star walkthrough videos.
Amazon Users: Many users are reporting that this update deletes their existing progress. Proceed with caution! and possibly turn off automatic updates for right now. Before updating be sure to backup your progress. For help with that you can check out our Ultimate Angry Birds backup tutorial (Android can be a bit trickier to backup, but it is doable). This is the second update to Amazon that features this tragic error, but Rovio has been informed of the issue.
Further Update: As of 9 August, it appears that Rovio and Amazon have solved this issue. We still encourage you to backup your data, just to be safe, but all seems to be well again.
Google Play Users: This update also features the addition of the Mighty Eagle. We have a separate post with all relevant information there.
New “King Pig” Level! (iPad only at this time)
If you go to the second page of the “Golden Eggs” screen, you will see a menacing, grinning King Pig. (What is required to unlock the King Pig for iPad is still unclear. We initially suspect you must have all Golden Eggs, though this has not been confirmed yet.) Tapping on him will open up a random level with a random twist to completing the level. Note that there is no score logged, but some of the new styles are pretty fun. Also, there seems to be a couple bugs here in terms of the end of the level. Especially in the “King Pig” mode, the end of the level typically shows what I can only assume is a “Fail” screen, despite the system giving the option to end the level after clearing all eggs. While not necessarily all level types, here’s what we’ve seen so far:
- King Pig: Birds turn into Pigs! And vice-versa. You are given several pigs to fling from your slingshot, and your objective is to pop the eggs that are in the level. Note that different pigs have different abilities, just like the birds so. For example, Helmet Pigs act just like the Black birds. Some small pigs have jetpacks to emulate Yellow birds. The smallest pigs split/triple like Blue birds. Et cetera.
- Material Mix Up: Two materials have been swapped! The birds in the level remain the same, but two of the materials (wood, ice/glass, and stone) have been switched, completely changing the approach to the level.
- Bird Frenzy: Beat the level with unlimited birds! While it sounds easy enough, it is actually a little challenging. You only have 40 seconds, the bird choice is random, and you are not told what bird will be available next. For example, being given a bunch of Red birds to combat an all-ice level is extremely difficult.
- Total Destruction: Tap on the level to explode it! You have 10 seconds. Everywhere you tap creates a small explosion. This one is not nearly as challenging, in most cases.
Update: The following is per a DM with Rovio about the availability and unlockability of the King Pig Levels. We are asking them to continue investigating since we have had several reports that 3-stars may not be sufficient. We strongly suspect that you must 3-star all levels (up to and including Birdday Party) and collect-and-star all 27 Golden Eggs.

Power Ups! (iOS and Google Play only at this time)
Let’s start this by saying that it is a complete surprise. Let us also establish that we would rather you post your personal opinions on the addition of power ups in this designated Forum post. This way, this post will remain as close to purely factual as possible.
Back to business. Yes, power ups have been added to the original Angry Birds app, just like in the Facebook version of the app. The four power ups are just like on Facebook: Super Seeds, King Sling, Sling Scope, and Birdquake. For a detailed outline of how these are used, check out the video at the top of the page, or our Power Ups explanation post which we posted back when the Facebook app was young.
A few notes about how power ups are used. You can only use up to two power ups per try at a level, and the two chosen would have to be distinct. At this time, there is no distinction on whether a score was achieved using power ups or without. You can earn some power ups in-game (the daily visit slot-machine is a neat feature), but in general they would need to be purchased. The pricing information is as follows:
- $1.99 for a bundle containing five uses of each of the four power ups.
- $3.99 for a bundle of 15 each.
- $9.99 for a bundle of 60 each.
- $19.99 for a bundle of 125 each.
- $0.99 for 10 uses of any individual power up.
- $1.99 for 30 uses of any individual power up.
- $4.99 for 80 uses of any individual power up.
- $9.99 for 180 uses of any individual power up.

ABN Leaderboards
Please do not enter scores on the ABo leaderboard that were obtained using power-ups. One of the key issues is the game does not distinguish between scores obtained using power-ups and those without. Yesterday, we announced a new feature on the leaderboard that allows you to undo your score. This should help those who accidentally entered power-up scores, as they can now be reverted (this could be ones only record of their scores). We are working on additional enhancements and will announce those soon.
Angry Birds Free HD Update
If you go to the third page in the newest version (1.4.1) of Angry Birds Free HD, you will see the addition of the King Pig Levels! Everything said above about the King Pig levels applies equally here: HD only at this time, four styles of competition, levels chosen at random from the app, and you need 3 stars on all levels to unlock it. Nothing new to report otherwise, as the update is primarily behind-the-scenes updates, but this was a nice surprise to say the least.
Nonetheless, we hope you enjoy this update. We will be working on getting all of our goodies online as soon as we can. In the meantime, be sure to check out some screenshots of the new features!

The golden king pig sounds like a fun addition. Will try it soon. Good thing there are no scores or the admins would go crazy! It’s kind’a like having 4 x the existing levels.

Yeah. Per the rumor of AB getting a level editor, with the new game mode, I think that there is one in there, but it’s for the program to use, not the end user.
How do you get the golden king pig? I’m looking on the iPad, but it is not there
It shows up at the upper left of the second page of Golden Eggs. I didn’t have any issues with it not appearing, as I already had all the Eggs prior to updating.
So, if it’s available to you, you should be able, after launching the app;
1. Swipe left to show the GE selection slice image
2. Swipe to the left to get to the 2nd GE page, and
3. If there, it’s in the extreme upper left.
@truckdriver Do you need all the golden eggs to unlock it?
Honestly, @bigbrotherbird97, I don’t really know. I already had all 27 of them when I updated, so for me, it simply showed up. If a threshold number of GE’s is required for the King Pig to show up, I couldn’t tell you what it might be, sorry.

It’s an interesting decision. What is more relevant about this update than the changes in the original gameplay?
Facts versus opinions.
It’s still interesting, because opinions were allowed at posts about other updates. And opinions like “it’s the best update” are allowed. But whatever. I’m just sad and aroused.
This is not the first time we have done this. When updates include this amount of controversy, we like to funnel it into one area that Rovio can look at. It’s actually more beneficial to everyone, I think — the ABN staff, the ABN community, guests visiting the site, and Rovio employees.

Has anyone else actually tried playing the new S&T levels without power-ups? Is it possible to 3* without using them? The AB Heike game was impossible to 3* without power ups.

The reason Facebook is currently disallowed from ABo is because of the presence of Power Ups. Otherwise, there is no significant difference between platforms.
I understand that. What I was referring to was the apparent subtle differences between them, ie a few blocks or stability issues of the levels. I don’t know for sure, but have read this before today from trustworthy players. Obviously its not my call, its just an opinion of why it’d be an unfair idea imo. No offence intended btw :)
If you added all the minor advantages that each platform may have over one another, you’d have a lot of them, but it would be far too chaotic to try and sort every leaderboard by platform in my opinion. Most levels, there are no difference. It’s only a few here and there, so I think it’s fine.

Think about it. Rovio did release the game where you launch pigs instead of birds! It’s right in this update! But I wish I had the update on Android.
And the pigs have the birds attributes. Startling, but fun!
I feel your pain. I’ve been checking amazon and Google play every 15 minutes. So frustrating. Makes me want to get an iPhone just so I can get the updates right away (I won’t).

Hmm, I don’t have King Pig on AB HD for iOS… but I don’t have all the Golden Egg’s either. I’m missing all the 3-star Golden Eggs except for Poached Eggs.
Same happened to me, I recently got the hd version so i don’t have all golden eggs, I just unlocked the 2nd page and it didn’t show him. I think you need all eggs. Above slim said “could be, I’m not sure.” when I told him.

It seems as though the King Pig, and associated mini games are just on the iPad version, at least for now. I was wondering why so many weren’t seeing the King, but the iPad business is slowly coming out.
I do think it is iPad only. My iPhone and iPad have the same progress and only the HD app has it.

I reeeallly hope that I don’t have to get all the golden eggs to get the King Pig. I have so far only made it to Mighty Hoax in ABO cuz of all the Space and Seasons updates lately.
I have 3 stars on every level, every feather and all golden eggs but no king pig golden egg shows up. Any other ideas on how to unlock him?? I’m playing on an original iPad.
Are you using the HD app? You have verified that your Episode Selection screen says 27 on the Golden Egg “episode”?

I am playing on iPad 3 G : and it is really sharp the retina display works Super. So once I open page # 2 I sow the King Pig and the number 27 makes me thing about this: …!!! More Golden Eggs coming up ; or … That’s it there are room at least for 2 more Golden Eggs …!!! So what you every one thing about these situations …!!!

Android has Space Eagles via IAP. This is not a comment on whether Android will receive Power Ups in their v2.2.0 update, but it’s just a statement of fact.
Not necessarily. There are in app purchases for Android in Angry Birds Space. That issue may be worked out now.
I think that, as of now, the issues with IAP and Android aren’t necessarily technical any longer. If I had to hazard a guess, the only issues now are most likely financial in nature.
So do we HAVE to use he power ups in each level to get the three stars or can I ignore the power ups and just three star the level the traditional way.?
3 stars can still be obtained the “traditional way”. (BTW, I will likely use this same phrase a lot in the coming days; I like how it sounds.)

Rovio should have added another score/highscore meter. With Powerups and right next to it Without Powerups.
I agree about the with or without power ups scores. When it comes to Android and PC, I plan to three star everything before I ever try power ups.

Chillingo it is not here anymore or what . An other big question for me : on this game ABO I do ton have yet the Smash Maniac : Using ….. Powers Up. ; Will increase my chances to get it for faster or remain the same….!!!!
Chillingo is still on the loading splash screen, but indeed Crystal seems to be gone.
Sorry, I don’t know if using Power-Ups contributes to Smash Maniac. My gut feeling though, is “yes”.
a block smashed is a block smashed. Makes sense to me.
Well, blocks smashed by the Mighty Eagle do not count. However, I see calling the Mighty Eagle as a clear separation of the game. Power-ups are not as clear, IMO.

Just played the King Pig screen and the options. Wow that is different and fun way to play.
Pigs killing bird eggs. Also the materials switch does challenge one to think differently. This update gives us a whole new way to play since I have not played FB with the power ups.

Perhaps. We haven’t determined that exactly.
The King Pig seems like Rovio attempting to counter Where’s my Water’s “Mystery Duck” mode, which has the same levels as the main game but with alternative objectives.
So they’ll catch on with Where’s my Water’s recently added feature, but not the editor from Amazing Alex (their own game!) or the ones featured in clones like Trucks and Skulls?
I also don’t like the positioning of the “Powerup shop” in the Pause menu; I keep hitting it when all I want to do is return to the level select.
It also looks like you have to find a Golden Egg that goes on Page 2 before you can unlock the Golden King Pig.

Love the update but I’m another one who can’t get the king pig levels. I have all golden eggs except all of the three star eggs. And I don’t have the energy to three star everything. No time! I’m bummed.

I don’t understand, is this the first time rovio has only updated angry birds with an exclusive ipad feature? I find it frustrating being that I have an ipod touch not an ipad.You forgot to mention the graphics updated on Ipad and Iphone/ipod touch.
Graphics updates are rather minor. There was more significant things to note.
At first I was confused about the King Pin levels, but I think I get it now. You play ONE random level with the “special” features, but then if you press the “next” button you move on to the next consecutive level sans features. Is this correct? Thanks!

O my! I was just looking at pictures of this site from 2 years ago on the Wayback Machine. It looked really different with the White bird on top instead of the eagle. And when the eagle was first added it was facing the other way! Why the change? This site has come such a long way guys! Thanks!
