A nice surprise update this morning to see that Angry Birds v2.2.0 now includes the second chapter of Surf and Turf! The update has so far been released on iOS, PC, and Android via the Amazon Appstore and Google Play, with more platforms coming soon. These beach-themed levels are exactly what is needed if you are stuck working, but wanting to be on a nice tropical vacation. If you need help with any of these new levels be sure to check out our 3 star walkthrough videos.
Amazon Users: Many users are reporting that this update deletes their existing progress. Proceed with caution! and possibly turn off automatic updates for right now. Before updating be sure to backup your progress. For help with that you can check out our Ultimate Angry Birds backup tutorial (Android can be a bit trickier to backup, but it is doable). This is the second update to Amazon that features this tragic error, but Rovio has been informed of the issue.
Further Update: As of 9 August, it appears that Rovio and Amazon have solved this issue. We still encourage you to backup your data, just to be safe, but all seems to be well again.
Google Play Users: This update also features the addition of the Mighty Eagle. We have a separate post with all relevant information there.
New “King Pig” Level! (iPad only at this time)
If you go to the second page of the “Golden Eggs” screen, you will see a menacing, grinning King Pig. (What is required to unlock the King Pig for iPad is still unclear. We initially suspect you must have all Golden Eggs, though this has not been confirmed yet.) Tapping on him will open up a random level with a random twist to completing the level. Note that there is no score logged, but some of the new styles are pretty fun. Also, there seems to be a couple bugs here in terms of the end of the level. Especially in the “King Pig” mode, the end of the level typically shows what I can only assume is a “Fail” screen, despite the system giving the option to end the level after clearing all eggs. While not necessarily all level types, here’s what we’ve seen so far:
- King Pig: Birds turn into Pigs! And vice-versa. You are given several pigs to fling from your slingshot, and your objective is to pop the eggs that are in the level. Note that different pigs have different abilities, just like the birds so. For example, Helmet Pigs act just like the Black birds. Some small pigs have jetpacks to emulate Yellow birds. The smallest pigs split/triple like Blue birds. Et cetera.
- Material Mix Up: Two materials have been swapped! The birds in the level remain the same, but two of the materials (wood, ice/glass, and stone) have been switched, completely changing the approach to the level.
- Bird Frenzy: Beat the level with unlimited birds! While it sounds easy enough, it is actually a little challenging. You only have 40 seconds, the bird choice is random, and you are not told what bird will be available next. For example, being given a bunch of Red birds to combat an all-ice level is extremely difficult.
- Total Destruction: Tap on the level to explode it! You have 10 seconds. Everywhere you tap creates a small explosion. This one is not nearly as challenging, in most cases.
Update: The following is per a DM with Rovio about the availability and unlockability of the King Pig Levels. We are asking them to continue investigating since we have had several reports that 3-stars may not be sufficient. We strongly suspect that you must 3-star all levels (up to and including Birdday Party) and collect-and-star all 27 Golden Eggs.

Power Ups! (iOS and Google Play only at this time)
Let’s start this by saying that it is a complete surprise. Let us also establish that we would rather you post your personal opinions on the addition of power ups in this designated Forum post. This way, this post will remain as close to purely factual as possible.
Back to business. Yes, power ups have been added to the original Angry Birds app, just like in the Facebook version of the app. The four power ups are just like on Facebook: Super Seeds, King Sling, Sling Scope, and Birdquake. For a detailed outline of how these are used, check out the video at the top of the page, or our Power Ups explanation post which we posted back when the Facebook app was young.
A few notes about how power ups are used. You can only use up to two power ups per try at a level, and the two chosen would have to be distinct. At this time, there is no distinction on whether a score was achieved using power ups or without. You can earn some power ups in-game (the daily visit slot-machine is a neat feature), but in general they would need to be purchased. The pricing information is as follows:
- $1.99 for a bundle containing five uses of each of the four power ups.
- $3.99 for a bundle of 15 each.
- $9.99 for a bundle of 60 each.
- $19.99 for a bundle of 125 each.
- $0.99 for 10 uses of any individual power up.
- $1.99 for 30 uses of any individual power up.
- $4.99 for 80 uses of any individual power up.
- $9.99 for 180 uses of any individual power up.

ABN Leaderboards
Please do not enter scores on the ABo leaderboard that were obtained using power-ups. One of the key issues is the game does not distinguish between scores obtained using power-ups and those without. Yesterday, we announced a new feature on the leaderboard that allows you to undo your score. This should help those who accidentally entered power-up scores, as they can now be reverted (this could be ones only record of their scores). We are working on additional enhancements and will announce those soon.
Angry Birds Free HD Update
If you go to the third page in the newest version (1.4.1) of Angry Birds Free HD, you will see the addition of the King Pig Levels! Everything said above about the King Pig levels applies equally here: HD only at this time, four styles of competition, levels chosen at random from the app, and you need 3 stars on all levels to unlock it. Nothing new to report otherwise, as the update is primarily behind-the-scenes updates, but this was a nice surprise to say the least.
Nonetheless, we hope you enjoy this update. We will be working on getting all of our goodies online as soon as we can. In the meantime, be sure to check out some screenshots of the new features!

There’s a bug in this new update. In the Accordion GE, the mustachioed pig was disappeared and it took about 2 sec to make the star to pop out.

If there’s no powerups in PC then, it’s imbalanced because it gives iOS users higher chance of getting a highscore.
Nothing like that actually. There are going to be different leader-boards here for competing here if that’s what you mean.
And that’s why when you go to the ABO Leaderboards it currently says: “Please do not enter scores using Power-Ups while we work on the leaderboards…..”
I’m hoping for 2 separate leaderboards – as in keep the current ABO Leaderboards for the no power ups scores and create a new one for the power ups because anyone using them on every level will have to start all over again and I, like others, have no intention of redoing all those levels again.
I’m a PC player and am glad (like @lamia – see below post) that there’s no power ups for me – I don’t want them.
I’ve seen the update notice but I’ll wait until some one else downloads it and says there’s no problems with it. I haven’t gotten around to backing up my files yet and don’t want to risk losing my scores. I’ve seen it happen to others once too often to risk it.
Don’t worry about the ABN Leaderboards. It will be OK.

I think it is taking so long time to release the Google Play and Amazon versions because Rovio need to get IAP to work. And maybe the ME is coming in this update for Android?! :)
@MUFC – hello again. Rovio managed to get IAP to work in AB Space. I’m just crossing my fingers that ME is added for Android in the other AB games. Now just waiting for this new update. It looks very exciting I’m going to update my PC tonight.
I’ve been checking both Google Play and the Amazon AppStore. Out of curiosity, I did a search for Angry Birds and opened Angry Birds Free – this is the one w ads. I have the ad-free version. Amazon has 2.2.0 but its only for the 2nd chapter of S&T. I don’t see anything showing the above new features or any in-app purchases. For anyone who is just looking for the new levels can download this one but you have to play all the levels n boards over again.

Alright, Amazon update available. It deleted all my previous progress though, had to restore with the backup app and there are no power-ups or King Pig, only the next 15 levels of S&T.

But two downers: The Power Ups (which will confuse users here and cause problems in the leader boards). Wish they had just kept them a FB feature. And the King Pig feature, only available for iPad. Hope it comes to other platforms soon!

@AMslimfordy I don’t know if you saw any of my other posts, but the power ups act MUCH different on ABO than on Facebook. I don’t think that Facebook users who used Facebook platform to get their score should be allowed to post their score on the ABO leaderboard, whether they used power ups or not. Some levels I couldn’t come within 20k. Facebook definitely would have an unfair advantage. Here’s why:
Birds carry through with a much higher momentum rate on Facebook app, compared to ABO. In ABO, there were plenty of shots that I was not able to hit, that I was on Facebook, because the momentum of the bird just died as soon as they hit a couple of blocks. If I were to simply transfer my high scores over to the ABO leaderboard, I am absolutely positive beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they would never ever get beaten, by anyone. My experiment with this is limited to the second installment of Surf and Turf, but all 15 levels, and I think that’s enough to determine.

Definitely appreciate the info. Very helpful. I would hope most users know to enter their FB scores on the FB leaderboards only. That leaderboard allows power ups, this one should stay power up free until we have a way to accommodate them. Even when we do, FB scores should stay on FB. Did I say FB enough in this comment?
Hmmm this is interesting. I think this difference doesn’t just apply to the use of power ups. I played some of the levels (without using power ups) on facebook’s Poached Eggs and Mighty Hoax (just to attain the Golden/Easter Eggs) and noticed on one level I attained an exceptional score. I went back to my ABO game to try and repeat it but could not do it. (I know this can be the case with any level re repeating lucky shots but this was one where I was sure I should have been able to repeat it.) For that reason, I’ve always suspected there was a difference in the games and now believe that is probably the case.

P.S. One can’t help wondering if Rovio tweaked the facebook levels to make them easier and because of that felt that to sell ABO to the facebook masses, they had to make the game easier – hence the addition of power ups – even if they aren’t as ‘powerful’ as the facebook editions.
This update has landed in the Amazon App Store, but it started to do that same funky Uninstall/Re-install that caused me to lose all of my Space progress. I’m backing up before I continue with the installation.
I don’t think the Amazon update will have all these awesome features that is listed. Both ABO apps in Amazon have the same thing listed.

Google play has the Space Premium which includes IAP, in my opinion, I think that they will have a premium for ABO soon.
The “Premium” app simply means ad-free. IAPs are available in both the Premium and ad-supported versions on AB:Space on Google Play.
Was the ad free space premium available on Google play when space originally came out? I don’t remember. I purchased the ad free version from Amazon bcz I didn’t see it available on Google Play. I thought the ad free was made available on Play when the 1st level of Utopia, DZ and MS Eagle came out. I could be mistaken. I’m just assuming that will happen for this update with all the IAP.
Perhaps, we aren’t really sure what the situation is with Amazon IAPs. There seem to be some issues with them right now.
Yes, I believe the ad-free version was available on Google Play back in March.
When I was still using my Xoom tablet, (Android ICS), I had all four apps in the Premium, or ad-free. In fact, they are still there, just somewhat outdated! It was well worth it to me to pay to be ad-free, as those ads are an annoying distraction, and in truth, I really can’t stand commercials!
Well, the backup process for my Droid X exceeded my time and patience, so I called Amazon about the issue. The lady I spoke with was AWESOME, but hadn’t heard anything about the issue I described. She submitted a “research inquiry” and told me to hold off installing the update for now. She said I should hear something back from her by Tuesday at the latest.
Jody, I also lost all of my progress on both Space and Original during this latest “update” from Amazon. I didn’t mind for Space, because it will be fun to replay all of the games and I had already downloaded a second copy to do just that. (My first copy of Space is ad-free, second copy is not, but the copies never interfered with each other. Now, I don’t need the second copy and its annoying ads anymore!) But, there was one game in Original that took me at least 100 tries to get 3 stars on my tiny little phone screen, and I am not happy about having to try that again (and again, and again).
That’s exactly how I felt! Losing my Space progress was kind of annoying, but the game isn’t old enough to have amassed too many levels. Original, on the other hand, has TONS of previous levels, and I can’t pretend like I wouldn’t ignore my real-life responsibilities trying to replay all of them!
I’m sorry you lost all of your progress. When I hear back from Amazon I’ll post the information here. I did mention this forum and that I’m not the only user affected.
I heard back from Amazon regarding my inquiry, and their answer was surprising:
“Thank you for allowing us to research the trouble you were experiencing with lost progress with a game update. We have completed our research and found that unfortunately many games will require that uninstall to install a newer version based on the signature the developers give the newer game. With this a loss in progress will occur and we do not have a way to change that at this time. You may not have to update the app if you do not want. Just close out of the update request window if it appears for you. Thank you for your patience while we completed this research.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.”
I was disappointed by this non-answer, so I called back and asked more pointed questions. It didn’t make sense to me that Rovio would be fine with a large percentage of their users losing their data, and it also didn’t make sense that Amazon would be okay with their customers experiencing this problem when none of their closest competitors experienced it. My customer service agent agreed that it was strange and has submitted another ticket. I’ll let you guys know what I find out.
Just so you know, I have talked to Rovio about this and they are actively investigating it as well. Since they haven’t had any issues until recently, they will likely be able to salvage an old system to avoid this issue from popping up again.

I *just* got a notification of another Space update. Maybe they’ve fixed the bugged and are re-releasing? I only just finished replaying the old levels, so I’m slightly reticent to install this…
Honestly, I’m not sure what to tell you about that…. Besides proceed at own risk and please let us know what happens IF you decide to update. I’m not updating Original until I have some kind of verbal confirmation that this issue has been addressed and completely fixed.
I think that having the Golden King Pig is based on whether you have completed all the Golden Eggs first. Not only that, but you have to get all the stars on them. I have the Golden Pig, and that’s all I can think of. It’s obviously not based on 3-starring all regular levels, or Mighty Eagle feathers. The fact that the Golden Pig is in the Golden Eggs section may be a hint.
That’s what I’m thinking too.
Oh, and also, I think you should create a special place for the Golden Pig. This thing is FUNNN!!!! And it is so different. You described it in the news report accurately.
This should be a place where members can share all of their interesting experiences, and twists with the different levels.
For instance, I got the Birdday Party level where you can get 200k+, and everything was wood and stone. Took me several tries to get it, but I did. On a different level, I’m sure that what they gave me was impossible, I spent about 20 minutes on it, and gave up. lol
Hrm, not a bad idea. There’s a slight issue with the non-universality of the “Level”, both in terms of platform availability and the randomness of the level assigned. However, we may be able to work something out in the next few days.

Because Apple got their appstore system right from the beginning, including updates and in app purchases. Google play is catching up, but they made some mistakes that took years to fix.

Mine did the same. I just got notification that the update for ABo was available but on the kindle it says update not available it has to be replaced. I lost all progress on Space doing this so I am not updating. I will play on my ipod. Called Amazon and they said they are working on a way to backup games but it is not available yet.
There seems to have been a few issues lately with Amazon’s updates. iOS has not had any similar issues.

Beware, the Amazon update will wipe out all of your progress!
If you have a rooted phone, I’d suggest you install Titanium Backup (free) and do a backup of both Angry Birds Original and Space before installing the update. That way, if the Amazon update wipes your progress, you can just restore it using Titanium Backup.

Hmm, it seems like there are also editions of this for Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, and other games where placing one of these characters unlocks a new game mode. Fruit Ninja unlocks a new mode, Cut the Rope unlocks a new challenge mode where you can earn a 4th blue star.
It also looks like that purchasing these things are meant to be the only way to unlock the games, with the exception of ABO. Maybe I’ll give the King Pig a go later on. :D

As for Cut the Rope, I asked but it seems that my question was deleted what is condition to unlock Candy Frenzy. Three stared all levels, find all drawings, play all levels, reach some minimum points in game, etc?
We don’t know that either. The dev has not answered our questions either.
